The first and worst rain of the year and I already can't wait for snow.
It always seems to happen on your worst day. After a hard weekend, you wake up for your 8:30 so exhausted that no amount of coffee can wake you up. You bum it to class because you are angry at the world and couldn’t care less. Sleepily, you begin your slow, defeated march to class... and then you feel it. That first, fat drop that sends shivers down your spine. You fumble for your phone to check the weather; in a vain attempt to convince yourself that what hit you really wasn’t a raindrop. But no, as you look down at your screen, several more drops come down and displace on your phone. Eventually, the watery army from the sky attacks you with all of its might. Your pace quickens as you feel the cold water beginning to soak through your layers. The trip across campus to Kennedy never seemed so long, and when you finally walk through the door you breathe a sigh of relief. But the worst has yet to come, as now you need to sit through your entire class soaked to the bone and cold.
As much as I understand the necessity for rain, I hate it during the school week. There is nothing worse than walking to class in rain, attempting to dodge puddles and keep your backpack semidry. I am not alone in this struggle; many others look on enviously at those with the foresight to dress for the rain. Even if you get an opportunity to change your clothes, the damage has already been done. The anger and frustration, mostly at your own lack of preparation, takes hold of your attitude for the rest of the day. You are snippy, disgruntled, and unpleasant for the rest of the day. The first stint of bad weather always serves as a reminder to check the weather before you leave for a morning class, lest you be stranded for the rest of the day in freezing cold clothes.
In a lot of ways, cold rain is infinitely worse than snow. With snow, there is the possibility of cancelations, snowball fights, and warm drinks with movies. Snow is beautiful, coating everything in shimmering white and puts me in the best of moods. With rain, it is a dark, depressing day where everything is a wet mess, myself included. A lot of people scorn at me when I say that I cannot wait for snow. The memory of last winter is still fresh in everyone’s mind. Though, I say before we focus on the bad portions of the winter, we look at the days this past week and how utterly depressing they were. Dark clouds, miserable people and grotesque scenery all made me wish for snow. So please, with winter right around the corner, look on the bright side and remember that although snow can be bad, it is no where near as obnoxious as this rain.
