Questions You Should Never Ask Sorority Women

When I was in high school, I was a really involved student, with good grades, and had tons of 'friends.' Everyone had told me that once I started college, everything would change. I always thought, 'It can't be that different.' Little did I know it was completely different. At first, I didn't know anyone on campus. I felt like a nobody. That is when I learned about this thing called a sorority. I've learned so much and could not be happier with my decision. Not everyone understands why I chose this path, or what it means to be in a sorority, and they want answers. We get it, you're curious but please stop asking these questions.

  • My favorite question of all time: "How often do you party?" We are a social organization, and therefore we do go out and have fun, but not everyone in a sorority is a party animal. Joining a sorority doesn't mean you have to go to every social event to 'fit in,' or throw your values out the window to have a little fun. We are like most students, we have homework, jobs, internships, goals, but most importantly, we have sisters to get us through the hardest parts of college and life.
  • Another one: "Did you get hazed?" No, dear, I didn't. If I did, I would not have joined a sorority. Maybe back in the day hazing was more acceptable, but now it is not. Aside from individual universities taking action on hazing, all Panhellenic sororities also have strict rules against hazing. It's just not sisterly.

  • The golden one: "Aren't you basically paying for your friends?" Hmm. Let me put it this way, we all have dues to pay. All that money goes to our philanthropies (which vary by sorority), insurance, and various other things that keep us running smoothly. We don't keep any of it. I could go on and on, but I won't. Just know that the money we pay goes to something bigger than just our chapter, and, like any other organization, it has to have some kind of funding to be up and running.

  • "What type of girl are you looking for?" There isn't a specific 'type' of girl that joins. I honestly didn't know we looked any different. What is everyone looking for when they think about a sorority girl? Maybe I should always dress in typical sorority clothes. But what do I know, I'm only already in a sorority. We come from all walks of life, with different passions and goals. The best part about it is that we can all come together and know that no matter who we are, our sisters will ALWAYS have our back.
  • "Do you only hang out with sisters?" I hang out with whomever I please. We have a life outside of our sorority and even within the Greek community, we have friends in all other sororities as well. So no, I don't just go out with my sisters. I do have friends in other sororities and outside of Greek life.
  • There are things we do secretly. No, I will never tell you. So please drop "So how is your ritual? What do you do during initiation?" type of questions. They are kept secret for a reason. If you really want to find out, go ahead and go through recruitment, accept a bid, and get initiated.
  • Last but not least, we all love our littles. I don't care that I just met her. I love her. Getting a little is the best thing that has happened to me since I went Greek. It deserves its own article. It really does. So please don't say, "you can't love someone you just met." I'll prove you wrong, and, needless to say, we love our bigs just as much.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
