An Open Letter To Donald Trump

Mr. Trump's campaign has been run on bigotry and hatred. Mr. Trump, I have a few questions for you.

Dear Mr. Trump,

When this campaign started and I saw that you were running, I chuckled a little. I thought to myself, “He’ll give up in a month.” Now, here we are, many months later, and you’re still running. You have pretty much sealed the deal on the GOP presidential nominee. You have run on bigotry and hatred throughout this primary season. This is what shocks me. How could republicans across the country support someone like this? Not only are you being a large bully to minorities, but you’re also separating America from its true values.

I am writing this letter to ask you a few questions, as I am very confused by what you are doing.

First, what is your foreign policy? I have heard nothing about your foreign policy. When asked about it, you avoid the question by saying, “I will make America great again.” Excuse me, Mr. Trump, but can you explain how you are going to do this? I hear you saying that we’ll just drop bombs on them or build a wall, but, from what I know, that doesn’t quite work. You'll drop bombs on them? What about all of the children, families, and friends who you just killed? Not everyone is radical. Please re-think that decision.

Second, do you really think that eliminating and exiling Muslims from our country is right? There are many different religions around the world and one of them is Islam. When our country was created, the founding fathers decided that there would be a separation of church and state. They also decided that we, as the people of the United States, have the freedom of religion. This means that anyone here in the USA can practice whichever religion they want to without ridicule. Islam is not the problem, jihadist Islam is. They make up a small portion of the Islam community. However, when you say that mosques should be closed or that Muslims need to wear something on their shirt to show that they are Muslims, then you are taking away their rights. You are also sounding more and more like Hitler.

Third, why would you cut money going to the educational system? I am a future educator and when I hear a nominee saying that they are going to cut the education budget, I get a little heated. The department of education and all public schools need money to be able to function. We shouldn’t be cutting the budget, we should be increasing the budget. Children are so important to our future society. If we want to stay internationally competitive, we need to keep our children learning and not taking away their opportunities. Cutting taxes and changing our tax system is one thing, but do not cut the education budget.

Lastly, why are you so against women? Not only do you treat us like we're pieces of meat, but you don't see us as equal to men. Personally, I don't want my president to be a pig. I want him or her to be respectful of women. We are not just wives and mothers, we are more than that. We are the future of this country and we should have more respect than what you give us.

Mr. Trump, you are running your campaign on pure hatred. I want to know why. Why would you think that this is OK? I also wonder why people are still supporting you. I don’t know if they think that it’s funny or if they really do believe that hatred and bigotry will make America great again. I hope that you lose because I, for one, know that you will not make America great again. The founding fathers would be very displeased with what you’ve done with your campaign.

Thanks,

Kathryn Lundy

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
