Why You Should Question Your Gender at Least Once

Gender roles don't define your gender, you do.

Why You Should Question Your Gender at Least Once

Do you act the way you do because that's what society expects from you? Or is it because you want to act that way?

Are you uncomfortable with how people expect you to act? Do you like the way you dress, or do you feel like it's a chore to dress in a way that matches what society defines as your gender?

Questioning your gender can help you figure that out because you're questioning what genuinely makes you happy instead of what society pushes on you. This doesn't necessarily mean you're questioning if you are fully male or female, but you could be questioning if you're somewhere in between or if you flow between the genders.

The implication of gender roles leads a lot of people to question their gender at some point or another, and I think everyone needs to go through that stage. Whether if it's just for a short period of time or something that you get really in depth about, questioning your gender at some point is a good thing.

Gender roles are something that everyone has to struggle with to some extent, some more than others. Some people fit into gender roles comfortably because that's just their personality and how they act without thinking, and there's nothing wrong with that.

However, most people deviate to some extent. They aren't super feminine or super masculine, and that's just as okay as completely fitting into gender roles.

So, instead of struggling with this balance between what society expects of you and what you want to do for yourself, take a step back some day and examine yourself. Why do you act the way you do? For others or for yourself?

Not fitting into societal expectations doesn't invalidate your gender in anyway. Choose the gender that you feel most comfortable with instead of letting others decide for you what the definition of a gender.

You might realize that the gender roles that you've had pushed on you are what make you uncomfortable, but you are still fully whatever gender you were before you questioned yourself.

Sometimes you might not realize that you are doing something that makes you unhappy until you decide to really think about it. So take a step back when you feel like you have the time and question why you do things the way you do them.

Gender roles are imposed on all of us from a young age, but that does not mean we have to stay with them if they make us uncomfortable. Some girls are going to want things that society thinks are masculine, and some men are going to want things that people think are feminine.

That doesn't make them any less of a man or a women, or anything in between for that matter. Your gender is about where you feel comfortable, and nothing else.

If you are a man that likes to wear makeup, that doesn't make you any less of a man. If you are a women that likes football and cars, that doesn't make you any less of a woman. Ideas and things like this have no true gender, and anyone can like them.

So instead of assuming you identify as male or female based on stereotypes, take a step back and get comfortable in your skin instead.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
