Listen, I love social media, I love the media and I love the Internet. It's basically what I'm majoring in, and my career is always going to involve these things, but there comes a time and place to just put the phone, tablet or laptop away.
Hear me out on my little persuasion.
Put your fricken phone down for the love of the whatever you believe in.
I am guilty of this issue. I love my phone – it's my life line. It's seriously saved my not-so=little tush many times. It's a lovely iPhone 6s with a pretty mint-blue case that also likes to get me in trouble.
Others in trouble, as well. No one is safe in the world of being an active social media user.
Issue 1
You are missing out, dude. Stop it. Stop taking a video instead of watching the concert. Stop taking 500 pictures while B-Spears passes you on the street, and wave "Hi" instead and tell her how "Lucky" was the defining song of your sixth year of life. Maybe then ask her kindly to snap a picture together. Then Instagram it to share with your friends that you met your childhood idol. Way better then some blurry picture of her passing by you quickly.
Looking through your camera is not really experiencing life. Yeah, we want to remember moments, but I'm sorry, those pictures of Washington D.C. from my seventh grade field trip have not been looked at in years and those pictures of Brit you took while she was walking past you will probably get deleted in six months because you won't even be able to make out who it is, and you"ll need more room on your phone.
Issue 2
Stop ignoring your friends and family. They can see you looking at their snap story, tweeting, posting on Facebook and liking Instagram pictures, so respond to their text or answer their call. Funny how social media makes it impossible to avoid a person without them knowing you're doing just that.
Social media and texting has made it oh-so-easy to hide behind a phone or computer. Maybe it's because I've been watching "Mad Men" a lot and cell phones and computers don't exist in that show, but wow, human interaction looks fun. My conclusion will touch more on this. I don't want bore you with repeating myself.
Issue 3
You have forgotten how to act like a normal human. Stop Googling them, stop stalking their Instagram and Facebook. I am a person who, from birth, has enjoyed laying in bed, watching movies and drinking coffee more than talking to a stranger. In my age, though, I've gotten better, thanks to college, but that's another story. If you hide behind your phone, point blank, you are going to forget how to actually act like a normal person.
"But we're so fun over text! Why are we so weird in person?" Because you are not your phone, and phones and computers makes it so easy to pretend to be who you aren't.
Issue 4
It gives you anxiety. Everyone on the Internet is not having as much fun as you think. I repeat: they are not; they are just like you. We've all seen these articles, too. We knows the tricks. We've seen the social media famous people delete their accounts because they do not want to condone these thoughts anymore. So, share your vacation pictures and the pictures of you and your friends, but don't obsess over other people and their apparent lives. It's just not cool to lie about who you are. You've seen the movies and watched the TV shows. You will be caught.
So, why do I love the Internet and my phone if I'm saying this?
We've all seen the articles and the endless posts about picking up the phone and calling your mother. So, do it. Ask someone on a date in person or over the phone, not through text or Snapchat (yes, that's happened to me). Call your friends to make plans; it's way faster.
Seriously, I love the digital age. Do not even get me started on talking about certain social media campaigns or Instagram accounts (big fan of Lil Bub and Tuna the dog – check them out, guys). Like I said, it's so much easier to stay in touch these days, which I love since I have friends and family all over the country, but just because I can like your picture, doesn't mean I also don't want to see your physical face and have a real conversation with you that doesn't require a keyboard.
So put your phone down and read a book, go outside, write a letter or call your friends and family, makes plans, live life and get to know them better.
