"Rick and Morty" is a television show that was created in 2013 by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. The television show premiered on Adult Swim and from there has come to be widely acclaimed. I’ll admit things can get a little weird, but it works. Each episode comes up with a unique story or planet that Rick and Morty are visiting. Rick is Morty’s alcoholic grandfather who is also an inventor and time traveler. Together they go on adventures such as entering a simulated reality, creating an amusement park within a homeless man, and facing the Trans-Dimensional Council of Ricks. Beth, Jerry (Morty’s parents) and Summer (Morty’s sister) are also forced into strange situations because of Rick’s inventions and travels. Rick does prove to be a jerk but the writers do a good job of establishing that he does care about Morty and would do a lot for him.
Everyone in the show is just as surprised with what’s going on as the characters. Roiland and Harmon don’t hold back with the weirdness and that's really benefitted the show, because while things get strange it’s still funny and enjoyable to watch.
The idea for the show was derived from an explicit "Back to The Future" short about Doc Brown and Marty McFly that Roiland had created for the Channel 101 film festival. His short was not well received but when Dan Harmon contacted him about creating a series for Adult Swim they decided to utilize his old work and from it they created "Rick and Morty." So if you’re a "Back to The Future" fan you might be into it. Not only this but Dan Harmon has said that their humor gained inspiration from mostly British Television series such as "Doctor Who," so if you’re fans of British television then maybe you’ll like it!
"Rick and Morty" has had some pretty great guest stars. There’s been John Oliver, Tara Strong, Stephen Colbert, Alex Hirsch, etc. While some are more recognizable than others, it’s always nice to discover someone you like has been a guest star for a television show you enjoy.
What’s also impressive about the show is that Justin Roiland, one of the creator's, voice acts as both Rick and Morty. Despite voice acting both, each character sounds very different. Rick has a more gruff voice and burps often while Morty stutters and his tone is shrill. Roiland's voice acting shows just how involved he is in the show as he did that while simultaneously acting as a writer for season one. Harmon also doubles as a voice actor in the show, playing the character of Bird Person who is an old friend of Rick’s.
This show is pretty much one you can jump into at any time, like a lot of other cartoons. The best word to describe the series would probably be ‘unpredictable’ and it’s a word that becomes truer and truer as the episodes go on. The amount of crazy scenarios Rick and Morty are put into is ridiculous and if you don’t mind how explicit it is you’ll only be left wanting more.
