Well, it’s that time of year again. The time when we break out the jeans and sweaters, Halloween decorations, and pumpkin flavored everything. For me, there is nothing I love more than this time of year. I walk outside and see the trees covered in my favorite colors (red and orange) and the weather decides to finally chill out (literally) so we can all breathe after 4 months of suffocating humidity. And for someone with asthma, it really sucks when you walk outside for some “fresh air” and can’t breathe because the humidity is causing your throat to close up. And don’t even get me started on the pollen. Summer is basically just 4 months of me trying to figure out how to breathe.
Fall, however, is the perfect season. No sweltering heat, no allergies (for me anyway), and multiple excuses to eat wonderful food. Anyone would be lying if they said food was not their favorite part about moving to the cooler seasons. Thanksgiving and Christmas are good for two things: family and food. And that’s really all you need.
It’s a time when everyone is expected and invited to take a break from life for a while and enjoy each other’s company. For most people, it is a time to catch up with the loved ones they haven’t seen in a while. For my family, it is one of the few times we all decide to come together and tolerate each other for the sake of the holiday…(I’m half kidding about that one). I’ve always remembered this time of year as a time when everyone around me is happy. Nowadays, that’s quite hard to come by. But every year, I find that people can’t help but feel happiness and joy around Thanksgiving and Christmas time. Maybe it’s being with family and maybe it’s just the nostalgia and spirit of it all. I honestly think it’s the food, but no matter what it is, it is the reason I get so excited when September rolls around.
It really is the food though. You can’t go wrong with the food of Thanksgiving and Christmas. There’s turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, ham, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, pumpkin pie, green beans, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, apples, PUMPKIN PIE! I might like pumpkin pie just a little bit, but who doesn’t? It is the only time I actually enjoy being too full. Then after we’ve eaten too much, we all end up finding a place to take a long nap. Every year, it’s always the same. We all break away one by one and the house all of a sudden becomes very quiet (except for my mom’s snoring).
I am currently on a plane back to Boston to start my third year in college and I can’t help thinking about the next time I get to come home, take a break, and spend time with my family. I know it’s probably going to fly right by, as time usually does, but right now, it couldn’t come soon enough.
