I can't even find the words right now to write about this, but I'm going to push through to talk about the horrific event that took place.
On June 12, 2016, a mass shooting and hate crime took place inside of the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Fifty people died, including gunman Omar Mateen, and fifty-three people were injured. It was the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman, the deadliest act of violence against LGBT people, and the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil since the September 11, 2001, attacks.
As soon as I heard the news of the shootings, I was completely heartbroken. What was supposed to be a safe haven for LGBT people to freely be themselves turned into a massacre. It seems now that there is no place safe for any LGBT person to be without the fear of being assaulted or killed.
The media was all over this shooting like wildfire. Were they talking about the victims of the shooting? Were they talking about the fact that the nightclub was a gay club? That the people at the club were majority latino/a and black? Nope! They talked about how the shooter was Muslim and talked only about his religion and talked about how he pledged allegiance to ISIS.
Yes, Mateen did pledge allegiance to the terrorist organization, but blaming his religion is not what this is about. Mateen was a closeted homosexual who was insecure about his feelings. His father was a huge homophobe, so Mateen had no place safe to come out. He was married and was abusive to his wife, so that led to a divorce. And for someone who was gay, the sight of two men kissing is what set him off to kill gays.
This is not about religion, this is about homophobia. After everything that LGBT people fought for with rights for themselves like marriage and not getting fired from their jobs just for something they have no control over. Fighting for treatment of AIDS, I can go on and on. And this is what we get. We get reminded that there are people out there who are willing to kill a person for their sexuality.
I cannot imagine the pain that the families of the victims are going through. We need to make sure that this will never happen again.
The talk of gun control is up in the air, as one side wants to banish it while the other thinks that gun control laws take away our Second Amendment right.
We need more protection from killers who go after LGBT people for their sexuality. No more killings, no more bathroom laws. This is 2016. No person should be killed for something that they have no control over.
