Proud To Be A Warrior

How Wayne State became my unexpected home.

Proud To Be A Warrior
Courtney Buzzell

Three different schools. Saying it, I'm not prideful. I'm not proud at the fact that I have been to three different schools in just my undergraduate career. I go to a school, make friends and become comfortable with my surroundings. Then out of no where, I up and leave. It became a joke among those closest to me. Three different schools. I'm not proud.

But there is pride that I have with my third school that I am currently attending. A shocking twist in my college journey is that I am enrolled at a university in Detroit. It's practically my backyard. 3 years ago I never saw myself going to college so close to my parents house. Here I am though, at Wayne State University, and unexpectedly, it became my home in the best possible way.

I am right where I am supposed to be. I'm proud to say that I am a Warrior, a creative warrior at that. I have a sense of belonging and there's a strong close community around me that I know has my back no matter what.

Being a warrior means being a part of Detroit's amazing comeback. Day in and day out I hear people tell me that they would never attend Wayne State because it's in Detroit. But in all actuality, Wayne State has one of the safest campuses across the nation. Detroit itself is getting a face-lift and both Midtown and downtown are booming with businesses. This university shows and holds the true spirit of the Motor City.

Being a warrior means going after your dreams, not matter how big they are. With supportive professors we are getting ourselves prepared for life after college. They train us with hands-on experience. They help guide us and pass on their wisdom. And with being in Detroit, there are countless opportunities knocking at our door. Us warriors make local and global impact and we continue to change the world.

Being a warrior I know I am on the right track to where ever I am going after my undergraduate. I've never felt unsafe on this campus, only love and support from the community of my fellow warriors. Here we bleed green and old. Here we're changing the world and letting our creative minds be free. Here we take pride in our school and our city.

I wouldn't change a single thing of my past decisions. I've been to three schools. My adventures led me to where I am right now. My adventures led me to who I am. I wouldn't change a single thing.

Though I may miss Portland, here in Detroit, I'm proud to be a Wayne State Warrior.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
