Working With A Sibling Is Like Living With One, All The Pros And Cons Included

As you may know, I work as a senior camp counselor over the summer. Fortunately, I'm a senior counselor in my town at the elementary school in which I attended. This winter, I pitched the idea of being a camp counselor to my now 16-year-old brother, Christopher. He was interested in the position of junior counselor working with elementary and middle school-aged children and earning money. Therefore, he applied for the job. With his strong application, personality, and interview, he landed the position, and he would be working with me.

While I was very excited that he received his first job, I was also a little apprehensive. Would he embarrass me? Would he be as dedicated as I am? These were constant thoughts rushing through my head. Though as I write this today, Chris has completed his first few days of work. The following are pros and cons of working with a sibling.

Pros

1. Never get bored with the constant humor

Chris and I are always teasing each other to pass the time.

2. You have just about the right time together as you do away from each other

We are separated into groups by grade. (I have second grade and Chris has fourth.) Although we are separated by grade, activities are in groups. We have fun to not only get competitive, but Chris and I genuinely enjoy time together having laughs.

3. Fun car rides together

Windows down + music playing + talking about our eventful days = success!

Cons

1. Other counselors enjoy pitting me and Chris against each other for the competition.

Some of my friends/co-workers will pin Chris against me in taking my personal items. While he does steal my valuables, it's all in good fun and makes for great laughs.

2. Competing in grade vs grade challenges

Dodgeball is always the biggest competition, and we are both very competitive.

3. Fear of running late

Chris wakes up 25 minutes before we have to leave, while fitting in his morning routine. Every day I fear he will make us late for work.

4. Disagreements on how to handle situations

We are human and see things from different perspectives. While one person can see something more logically, the other sees the situation from a different standpoint. Coming to a consensus can be difficult at times.

We look forward to continuing to work and bond together while making many more memorable moments!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
