Ahh, second semester, the time of winter parkas, snow boots, sub-zero temperatures, and then the worst part -- having to switch rooms when you return to school. For most sororities, you are given the chance to live with new roommates for your second semester of living in the house.
With that being said, it can get pretty chaotic in a small house of 50 girls trying to move all of their belongings up or down three flights of stairs. Here, I have outlined some pros and cons to changing rooms at the semester.
Pro: You get to meet new roommates and room with girls you would not have had the opportunity to live with before. It's a good way to broaden your horizons and branch out to girls, instead of being isolated to your 4 person friend group of your quad.
Con: You cannot live with your significant other(s) anymore. Some roommates become family and you realize you do everything together no matter what it is. So living apart seems like the worst form of cruelty. Even living down the hall seems like a world away.
Pro: Getting a fresh start to the semester with a new environment. Sometimes it can get old, living in the same place for an extended amount of time; however, changing rooms at the semester gives you new hall mates and a new space to be motivated to study.
Con: Your old room was your safe-haven and nothing can compare. You love how everything is perfectly organized and that the closet space is to die for. Moving to a new room with less closet space sounds like a form of torture.
Pro: Redecorating. Hello, who doesn't want to be able to reorganize and spice up a new room?
Con: The "are-you-kidding-me-I-have-to-change-rooms" face. Absolutely not. You have way too much stuff for your own good and moving it up or down a flight of stairs would not be the ideal way to spend a Friday afternoon.
Overall, I personally feel that it is a good idea for sorority houses to switch rooms at the semester to ensure that everyone still is getting along with new roommates and it creates a new environment for the next semester. As for me, I am looking forward to living in the "Presidential Suite" of Alpha Chi for the next year (which includes my own bathroom, hello heaven).
