Most people know that I wear contacts. Unless people have met me for the first time in their life and they assume that my eyesight is perfect.
Well, my eyesight has been bad since eighth grade when I had to get glasses in the middle of the year.
I wore them all the time until I got contacts that summer. After that, I only had two occasions where I wore my glasses for more than two days in a row.
The first was freshman year of high school.
The second was last week.
They were both for the same reason: I had pink eye.
Now before I get into the main reason of this article, I just want to say pink eye is one of the most uncomfortable things to have. I hate it both times I had it.
After being someone who only wore glasses at college when I didn’t feel like putting on my contacts, wearing them for an entire week here was different. Pretty much everyone knows I wear contacts. But the week brought me to realization.
I will never have perfect eyesight in my life, but if I were to have laser eye surgery which won’t happen then I will again and not have to worry about contacts or glasses again.
The people that I met in college so far pretty much only know me for wearing contacts and having my normal face. But with wearing glasses for a week, there was a point where I had to take off my glasses to show that I’m present.
This week definitely brought an eye opener, and now I’m back to wearing my contacts (opened a fresh pair this morning). But despite the having pink eye and learning how to put eye drops into my socket, it made me realize that I can choose what I want people to see me as. If I want to wear contacts so be it. If I want to wear glasses so be it.
Let me live my life.
