As we all know, being single on Valentine's Day is rough. Whether or not we admit it out loud, this day is made for people in love and without that, it can be hard not to be bitter. However, not being in a relationship on Valentine's Day does have its pros and cons.
The Cons:
1. You can't go out to eat because it's so busy.
Don't even think about going out to eat because everywhere will have a super long waiting time. Even if you do end up finding somewhere that will seat you quickly, you will most likely be surrounded by couples either wishing you could find something like that, or you'd be so disgusted that you want to get up and leave. So, unless you're not the least bit bitter, save yourself the trouble and either order delivery or make something in your own kitchen.
2. Being the only single friend.
We can't all be in relationships at the same time. That means you or one of your friends may be the only single one out of your friend group at some point. It may sound miserable listening to your friends talk about how exciting their Valentine's Day plans are, but the best way to handle this is just to try and be happy for them. Be supportive, and maybe one day, their significant other will set you up on a date with their attractive friend.
3. Social media
In our world today, everyone always has to post, share and retweet everything they're doing, seeing, or celebrating. That includes Valentine's Day. Your newsfeed will be filled with cute couple pictures, sappy cards, and extravagant gifts. Just try to ignore them as hard as it may be. On the other hand, try to refrain from tweeting about how you'll never find love, or making your Facebook status something about how you hate relationships. Just because you're single on one day of the year, doesn't mean you'll be single forever.
The Pros:
1. The discounted candy you can buy and consume after.
Everyone knows that the day after Valentine's Day, candy and chocolates go on sale. Who says you need someone to give them to? You can eat as much as you want, as you watch sappy romantic movies in your bed, of course.
2. You have more money because you didn't have to buy anyone a Valentine's Day present.
Whether it's Valentine's Day or any other day, being single means saving money because you don't have to buy things for your significant other. That means there is more money in your pocket to spend on your family, friends, or even yourself. So treat yo'self to that new Patagonia you've been wanting for forever.
3. No plans? Do something anyways.
Just because you don't have a date doesn't mean you can't do anything. Hit the gym. No, the reason you're single is not because you're out of shape. Who doesn't want single eye-candy to watch while they're running on the treadmill? Plus, you're doing something healthy for yourself and, if you're lucky, maybe you'll meet someone special. Even if you're not a big gym person, do something fun like plan a singles party with some of your single friends!
If you don't have someone special this year, don't assume it will be the worst day of your life. If you do have someone, don't make your friends feel bad because they don't. Valentine's Day--it's what you make it.
