Do you remember when you were a kid and you pinky swore about everything? That promise was usually broken when the bell rang and recess was over so why did we make that promise? Promises ensure security, gain trust and build friendships, but are nearly almost always broken in some way. Whether you promised your friend you wouldn't tell the guy she liked that she had a crush on him or you promised not to dress "cute" that day at school; a promise is a promise-- keep it.
Why does one promise mean more than another promise? Why is it so incredibly hard for people to keep a promise? A promise can be explained in many ways by many different people, but the one complementary word that most people agree with is undeniably. When one makes a promise they should undeniably follow through with whatever they promised no matter the degree of the repercussions if broken. I am not saying that every single promise one makes will never be broken because we all makes mistakes in life.
Most people don't understand that a secret is a promise. You are telling someone, that you trust, a part of your life that you don't want anyone else to know about. Why does one feel the need to share a piece of information that someone trusted you with to people you barely know so they can start spreading unwanted rumors?
Today's society has manipulated promises into something that doesn't mean what it used to. Never feel pressure for not making a promise if you have no intention or capability of keeping it. I hope the next time you make a promise that you genuinely mean the words that are coming out of your mouth no matter how small or how big the promise is.
