College isn't all fun and games, especially when it comes to class. On a daily basis, it doesn't consist of sleeping through lectures, going to class just to make friends, to find that special someone, or taking days off (on more than one unneeded occasion). It involves hard work and eventually graduating with that desired degree. Going to class is one of the requirements for college students, though some might not see it that way. Still, you'll meet a handful of individuals, the most important being professors. Here are five types that you may meet in college:
1. The continuous lecturer
The title speaks for itself. There is always that one professor, whether you meet them in your freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year that just lectures non-stop. It's especially troublesome if the professor is passionate about a certain subject. You won't be able to get one question in. In fact, you'll be lucky if you manage to snag a small window of time to chat with them before or after class.
Be prepared to bring a binder full of paper and pencils/pens. You'll need them. I know I did.
2. The laid back professor
There are the extremely strict professors on one end of the spectrum, and their respective opposites on the other. The laid back professor would be on that opposite end. For their classes, there is such a thing as an easy A. You'll get some points counted toward your grade just for participating in class (or for showing up). Homework is not given out much, and if it is, it's simple and easy to understand. Tests, midterms and finals are a piece of cake, especially if they are multiple choice.
Nothing is entirely difficult in this setting.
3. The egotistical professor
These types of professors are just as bad as the strict ones. If they have a reputation as one of the hardest instructors (or vice versa, but this can be rare), then you can be assured that measures will be taken to keep those statements flowing. If they have a rep of never giving full credit for even the best assignments, then don't expect any special treatment. It's rare to receive even a little bit. If their classes are difficult, then tests, midterms and finals will be even worse. In addition, they will be expected to be addressed by their title, not by anything else (since they do not tolerate that). From my experience, classes taught by these professors are not exactly enjoyable.
Try to avoid these professors if you can after you encounter them your first year of college (or whenever you encounter them). It's tough to get an A in their classes. Trust me, I know what I’m talking about here!
4. The monotonous professor
There's always that one instructor who seems to bore the class to tears, isn't there? Whether in their lectures or tone of voice, everything about them shouts, "boring!" From notes on the board to videos shown in class, you can't expect anything exciting. Occasional glances at the clock or your watch will become more frequent, and you'll be itching to get out of your seat for the last five minutes of class. Not to mention that it will be extremely tempting to whip out your phone and play video games or text friends during class time.
Though it will be a struggle to even sit through this class (and much worse when you know you have to attend), your best bet is to get through it with a good attitude and pay attention. Who knows? Maybe you'll emerge as one of the best students in the class. Just remember to bring your cup of coffee and don’t fall asleep!
5. The strict professor
Similar to the egotistical professors, these instructors can be very difficult and it will be hard to pass their classes in flying colors. Everything will be by the book, they will follow the syllabus like a taskmaster and it will be very, very rare when they provide exceptions to assignments. If you miss a test, too bad— you won't be able to make it up. Skipping class will set you back farther than what you intended (or hoped, but let's not make that the case). Giving them what they want in assignments will get you on their good side.
For this professor and his/her classes, just manage to keep a good attitude and stay on top of your assignments. You'll need to.
College is filled with its share of students and professors, and usually every semester. Some instructors are extremely difficult, others are extremely easy. Just try to keep a good attitude, do your work and keep that GPA up. You'll be fine!
