Professionalism Is Not An Option, Donald Trump, It's A Demand

Professionalism should not be treated as an option, and the reinforcement of that starts at the most visible position in the country--the President.

President Donald Trump often pushes the line with his conduct. In fact, in most cases, he clearly crosses over from being professional to being unprofessional.

How is it that the President of the United States can get away with behavior that would get most people fired?

One of the first lessons you hear from every teacher from middle school on up is how what you post on your social media can have consequences.

Stories have been circulating for ages about the things that employees have posted on their social media accounts that have gotten them fired or cost them the job before they even had it.

Yet, Trump tweets things at all hours of the morning—sending jabs at everything and everyone.

If it’s considered a negative reflection on the company to have someone who conducts themselves a certain way online—why is it not considered a negative reflection on the United States for Trump to post such outlandish things?

Or, if we have established that it is a negative reflection on the United States, why do we continue to allow it to happen?

Why do we continue to say, “This conduct is wrong, but because it’s the President, then it’s dismissed.”

Conduct that is wrong is wrong period. No position gives you an “out” on professional conduct.

In fact, one would think that the way the president acts on Twitter has a greater impact than how your local grocery store’s cashier acts, yet if that cashier were to post something that said something similar to what Trump has posted; she would lose her job.

As a college student, I’m constantly told about how my social media directly impacts my future. Yet, when we have someone like Trump holding the highest office in the world tweeting off whatever he feels like at 3:00 in the morning—all of that work is being unenforced.

Trump is teaching the future generation that you don’t need to act professionally to have a professional position, and that is not OK.

It’s not OK to tweet about the person you disagree with politically.

It’s not OK to tweet about the person who challenged you.

If every employee in the world acted the way Trump did, we wouldn’t have any major corporations because they all would have failed before they started due to the lack of professionalism within the business.

Professionalism should not be treated as an option, and the reinforcement of that starts at the most visible position in the country--the President.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
