Sometimes, after a long day my head hurts, my eyes are dry, and I just really don't feel like doing anything that requires too much effort. When we have spare time, many of us flock to our phones, computers, or TV. The five activities listed below are great to do during your downtime, because unlike watching TV, they are productive! So, turn on some background noise, partake in one of these mindless activities and relax.
1. Adult Coloring Books
When adult coloring books first became popular a few years ago, I thought they were ridiculous. Why market coloring books specifically to adults when adults can color regular children's coloring books? Well, I'm stupid because adult coloring books are a big hit, mostly because there are so many designs and subjects to choose from! I've seen Harry Potter, anatomical, biblical, indie, etc. coloring books, so there's pretty much an adult coloring book out there for everyone.
2. Embroidery
You may think that embroidery is for grandmas, but I assure you, embroidery is not a dying art. Modern embroidery is currently a trend and the outcome is awesome. The artist who created the pieces shown above offers many more of her products through Etsy for a fairly reasonable price. I like to browse Pinterest and Etsy to get inspiration for my embroidery creations. Embroidery may look difficult and very time-consuming, but it really is quite simple and takes very little skill. All you need is an embroidery hoop, fabric, needle, and thread!
3. Planner or Bullet Journal
I would be lost without my journal/planner. When I have a break between assignments, I check my planner and make sure I'm on schedule and keeping it organized. Bullet journals definitely require more work than a regular planner, but their purpose is to merge your planner and journal into one neat, organized book. Bullet journals have bullets rather than lines that you use to record assignments, appointments, to-do lists, goals, etc. If this seems too tedious for you, consider using a journal. Writing down your daily events, thoughts, and doodles is a good way to relax and get your mind off daily stress.
4. Crocheting and Knitting
Crocheting sounds like another grandma hobby, but it's a good skill to have. You don't have to crochet an afghan to throw over a rocking chair. You could crochet a scarf, headband, mittens, throw, etc. The best thing about crocheting is that the only materials you need are yarn and a crocheting needle. I'm not very familiar with knitting, but I've heard that many people find it easier than crocheting even though you use two needles rather than one to knit. Regardless, these hobbies are fun to do when you're winding down from the day, and you want to relax your mind. Use your idle time to make something useful!
5. Read Leisure Material
A problem I encounter often is wanting to read but being too tired to concentrate on the book. If you have to read books for class or work, then maybe you don't want to dedicate time at home for reading. In this case, try reading leisure material. A nice mystery novel or magazine is relaxing to read and takes little effort to interpret. Give your brain a break and read something purely for entertainment.
