We've all been at that point where we have no choice, but to get started on a project that we've been sitting on to meet a deadline. Every student knows this pressure better than anyone. You have plenty of time to get started, don't worry about it now! You have an entire week to get that thing done! There's so much else going on, let's take care of that first. Even as the words form in your head, you have to force yourself to believe them.
You know full well that failing to complete an assignment will have dire consequences, but for a number of reasons, you'll keep pushing the time to get started. Perhaps you get distracted easily, or maybe you're more entertained by simple things. Whatever the cause, you can never really get rid of that nagging feeling in the back of your head, no matter how much you try to ignore it.
Once you really think about it, there really is no benefit to putting off something important for so long. Deadlines can come at inconvenient times, say, at the end of a break. One of the very few breaks you get during the year. Most of us have family and friends to keep track of, monetary responsibilities, what have you. You know that by waiting, you won't be able to present the best product of your ability, but one way or another, it has to be done.
Here is where human nature comes into play -- self-preservation! You don't want to do your work! You want to be responsible, but there's just so much to be done and it sounds so boring. Keeping yourself happy and entertained is one of your basic human tendencies, and going against that seems a bit crazy, doesn't it? There are a few tricks you can utilize to take away a bit of the sting, though.
First of all, just understanding and accepting the fact that once you're done, everything will be better, is a huge relief. Everything that you want to do besides your assignment will be more fulfilling and enjoyable since you don't have that nagging voice in the back of your head. Getting the bad things out of the way makes the good things that much better. It's hard to see it that way from an initial standpoint, but your future self will be thanking you for your dedication and maturity. Having the ability and determination to accept this fact is a huge sign of maturity.
This applies to every aspect in life: Be responsible before you try to have fun. Getting everything done sooner will make life in general much easier. Anyone who has been through the same thing as you will most assuredly tell you the same thing - We've all been there. Just keep at it, and before you know it, it'll be done and you can breathe a much-needed sigh of relief. Just make sure you don't get distra....
