The Problem With Dress Codes

There is a problem with dress codes, and it needs to be changed.

The Problem With Dress Codes

It's that time of the year again. It's finally 70 degrees outside and it's time to start wearing shorts. But wait, if you have to work you might not even be able to do that. I know that at my work, I won't be able to wear any because mine are not long enough. And I'm sure as hell not going out and spending $100 or more on some new shorts that will fit the dress code at my job.

I personally think that having to wear shorts that come all the way down to my knees is just crazy. I know that the same things are happening in schools all the time and it's just not fair. The worst part about the dress codes is that it pretty much only applies to we women.

When we were getting talked to about our dress code at work, they pretty much only said it to the women who were working. I get that we are a business and that we have to come in looking presentable. I know that we are a product of the store so they do not want us to wear something that will end up showing half of our butts, but I don't think that it's fair to have to wear something that is covering up pretty much everything.

We can only wear certain tank tops as well at my work because obviously shoulders are super distracting. I get that, men.

So the problem that I have with this whole thing, is how is it fair that women have to care about what they wear? Men can have their pants baggy and even sagging. I personally don't want to look at their butts, but I guess that it's OK since they are men. I do think that something needs to be done because we have to stop sexualizing women and how they dress.

I'm pretty sure that there really isn't one single guy in the world who is turned on by my shoulders, but hey, I could be wrong. But, in all honesty, this is just something that gives men a way to bitch about how women have been dressing/wanting to dress.

I used to get in trouble at school sometimes because of the clothing that I wore -- we had that finger rule. Your shorts had to come down to your fingertips or else they were too short. I still will never understand why they need to be that long. I don't really know many girls that wear shorts that are that long. And now that I"m in college and working, I'm still being told what to wear.

The whole thing just seems crazy to me. I'm not going to come in something that is showing my butt, but that pretty much means that I can't wear any of the shorts from our store either. Funnily enough, we can sell shorts that aren't long, and we can't even wear them in the store.

So, something needs to be done about this. I think that it's crazy in the first place that we are even forced to have a dress code. You would think in the day and age we are in, this would not be a problem, but it is.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
