Spike Lee Comes To Spelman College To Honor Dr. Schmidt Campbell

On Friday, April 8, 2016, Spike Lee came to Sisters' Chapel to honor long time friend Dr.Campbell. The doors opened at Sister's Chapel at six p.m, and of course the line was already long with Spelman alumnae, Spelmanites, and visitors in line in anticipation on seeing Spike Lee that evening. After waiting a couple of minutes for the V.I.P. to enter the chapel the line began to move as we entered and tried to pick the best seats as they had designated sections for students and others. With the persuasion from my roommate and her friend, we sat in the very first row, so we can see Spike Lee face to face as he speaks to the audience and might even get a wave. Good thing I didn't get up and move because the front row was where all the action was. The row behind us, is where Dr.Campbell and her family and friends had been seated. Along with Dr.Campbell, Kerry Washington's husband,Nnamdi Asomugha, the first African American woman president Johnnetta B. Cole, and actress Alfre Woodard to name a few had arrived to celebrate Dr.Campbell.

As it kicked off the four-day event for the celebration of the 10th president of Spelman College. Dr. Campbell is big on the arts spectrum, so it was to no surprise that the events would be arts centered. Before being appointed Pesident, Dr. Campbell was dean emerita of Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and university professor in the Department of Art and Public Policy. Dr. Campbell Tisch vaulted to the top echelon of university art schools. While at Tisch, she invented new fields of study, fostered collaboration between art and technology, and increased the diversity of minority students studying there from 10 percent to 40 percent. She has given numerous lectures, authored many papers and articles, and is co-author of "Harlem Renaissance: Art of Black America" and "Memory and Metaphor: The Art of Romare Bearden."

As the crowd was settled, after a few minutes a Spelmanite came to make the introduction and information about Spike Lee. As the introduction came to a end the man of the hour came to center stage as everyone stood up and applauded. Lee had a short speech as he told he was here for the support of Dr.Campbell as he complimented her saying that she was a brilliant and phenomenal woman. Afterwards the audience was shown his new documentary " 2 Fists up", which was documented about The University of Missouri during their times of racial tension and battle against former President Timothy M. Wolfe. The documentary had highlighted the black women that are creating movements, such as, Black Lives Matter and Concerned Student 1950 created by black student women from University of Missouri. As it came to a end the entire place were on their feet clapping and shouting over another great piece from Spike Lee. As he came out after the credits rolled, he began shouting Ashe! and Power! As he went through some of the first going back and forth as the crowd joined in with our fists raised high. As the theme of the inauguration was equality in honor of Harriet E. Giles and Sophia B. Packard, who came to Atlanta from Massachusetts 135 years ago and, in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church, started a school for recently freed Black women. The documentary seem very appropriate as it showed the fight for racial equality and the power of Black women. as the founders of Spelman College, Harriet E. Giles and Sophia B. Packard had opened the door for black women to have the opportunity to receive education. The inauguration with Spike Lee correlates together with the Black women being seen as a equal power of leadership and also the racial tension in Missouri and in the University of Missouri against former President Timothy M. Wolfe. Through the art of film the message of equality was shown through Spike Lee's documentary in following the creators and members of Concerned Students 1950.

After the excitement had died down, we then could ask questions to Lee as he responded wit short and simple answers for all while representing Brooklyn, New York. Which most of the answers, were that to follow your dreams and speak things into existence. As the questions were finished Spelman had given him his own Spelman hoodie and hat as a gift. Then quickly dashed away has he concluded the evening with a quick bye as everyone departed the chapel. Overall, the experience was electrifying in seeing Spike lee and celebrating Dr. Campbell in becoming the tenth president of Spelman.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
