Pre-College Nerves
Marygrove Campus News

College is just a month a way, this is one of the biggest moments in our lives!

With big moments, come lots of preparation and anxiety. Some of us are commuting and some of us are living on campus and while that is a big difference, college will be a new experience for everyone. I'm sure we're all nervous, and that's OK.

Summer is dwindling down and the nerves are coming in hot.

Being a freshman, I have a plethora of worries. Especially about buying school supplies, packing and forgetting things at home. With this being my first year and all, it's only appropriate that I include that I might actually cry when my dad leaves me at my dorm on move in day. But, even with the worries and nerves, I'm pretty excited to start this new chapter in my book. College is a place I never thought I would be at. I always shrugged it off and said "i'm not going to go to college". I thought high school would be my last stop, but, here I am.

The transition from high school to college poses challenges, but also breeds opportunity.

The challenge, as I previously stated, for me personally is keeping up with the course load and perfecting my time management skills. While this may not be the case for everyone, those issues are the ones that most people struggle with. But, whatever your challenge is, stay positive and try your best to conquer it. Now, my opportunity? I won't discover it until I get there. Keep in mind that opportunity doesn't come from sitting in your dorm(or at home) until it's time for class, it comes from getting out there and showcasing yourself to your peers. It's easier than you think, and if you try, it will be all the more simple. Being nervous is completely normal and with the countdown on high speed, we're all bound to be even more high-strung. Here's a little advice from the girl who hasn't even started her freshman year of college yet (I know what you're all thinking: "She really wants to give us advice? She has no idea what college will be like." And, you're right. But I promise you, it's worth it.): This is the beginning of a new start, don't let your nerves stop you from experiencing college to the fullest. Don't be afraid to be yourself and, you know, what? Just have fun, do the best that you can in your classes, and get involved. When it all comes down to it, the nerves will go away and everything will fall into place. Don't let your pre-college nerves set the tone for your year, it's all up to you and you can make it an amazing year if you try.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
