Following the success of Marvel and Netflix's ventures with "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones," AMC tested the waters with a darker, more violent series based on a comic book. The supernatural thriller "Preacher" premiered at the end of May, with 10 episodes ordered to air throughout the summer season. After only half aired, AMC ordered a second season.
The series stars Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer, a preacher with a questionable past who is living in a small Texas town. In the pilot, he prays for a sign from God to continue his work after a confrontation with an abusive husband. An entity appears and inhabits him, and from that entity, Custer is given the ability to control other people's actions. Cooper is no stranger to comic book to television series, as he played Howard Stark in both the "Captain America: The First Avenger" film and subsequent "Agent Carter" series on ABC.
Season one of "Preacher" will wrap with the season finale airing on July 31. Immediately following the finale, "Talking Preacher" will air. "Talking Preacher" follows the format of "Talking Dead," which airs after select episode of "The Walking Dead." It's a live talk-show where the stars of Preacher discuss what happened over the course of the first season. Occasionally, they also answer questions from social media.
Season two is set to air some time in 2017, with three more episodes than the first season had. Assuming AMC sticks to their plan from this season, we can look forward to seeing "Preacher" return next summer with a longer run-time.
