If you’re like me, you’re ready to be home, drinking your parents wine, sleeping in your own bed, seeing friends from home, and eating lots and lots of pie. But, alas, you’re still at school, probably watching tons of Netflix, procrastinating everything important in your life freaking out about even starting to think about finals in a couple of weeks. I’m totally in the same sinking boat.
This past weekend, my sorority hosted its annual Body Image 3D workshops, where we had conversations about taking care of our mind, body, and soul, as college kids living in the society that we do. This served as an amazing pick-me-up for the push right before Thanksgiving break that I seriously needed. It also inspired me to really think about the ways in which we all are so seriously awesome.
1. “You is kind, you is smart, you is important.”
Turns out its not just a hugely famous line from "The Help," but it’s also 100 percent true, despite some grammar issues that I trust you will overlook for me because it’s. Just. That. Perfect. You are all of these things. Think about that the next time you’re nervous to talk in class, or Monday chapter: you are kind, you are smart, and you sure as hell are important.
2. Try and block out all of our Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat girlcrushes that always seem to have it going on (but seriously, do they ever go to class? And literally, why can’t my hair look like theirs all the time?).
Comparing yourself to others is, unfortunately, going to happen in today’s society, but once we can realize how toxic that behavior is we can start to look deeply into our own lives and appreciate the inner and outer beauty of every single one of us.
3. Think about how much better you will feel if you take care of yourself, mind, body, and soul.
No, this doesn’t just mean going to class and to the gym a couple of times a week and declining that fifth vodka shot on Thursday nights. It means taking time for yourself each day, because you deserve it. Take a bath, watch an extra hour of Netflix, I don’t care, but just do something that you love doing and that makes you happy.
4. Of course everyone should be a little bit self-centered. What are you supposed to be, everyone else-centered?
This goes back to number three a little bit. Take time for yourself and think about what makes you the happiest you can be. Obviously we aren’t all saints and can't think of others all day every day, but there has to be a happy medium in life, so make time to pursue your happiness. And if making others happy makes you happy, more power to ya.
5. Everything does not have to be perfect 24/7. Besides, no one really has their life together anyway.
That’s what Sundays are for.
Lots of love and lots (and lots) of pie.
