With the fourth largest fraternity system in the country, the University of Florida provides a channel of opportunities for anyone who wants to acquire the benefits of "Greek Life." But with only a week of recruitment, deciding which fraternity to join can become a arduous venture full of sacrifices and indecisiveness. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you choose the fraternity that is right for you.
Step 1: List your Fraternal Expectations
A fraternity is an organization of men who have pledged to maintain the integrity and excellence of their chapter for life. With such a devout commitment comes an internal bond of brotherhood. But before you commit yourself to such an allegiance, you must derive your own definition of "brotherhood." To successfully complete this step, ask yourself the following:
1. Do I want to join a fraternity that is similar to my personality?
2. What skills/experiences am I looking to get out of a fraternity?
3. How can a fraternity benefit my life as a whole?
Step 2: Ask Around
You are on vacation and your hungry. Unfamiliar with the region, you walk down to the concierge and ASK her where she RECOMMENDS to eat. Similar to finding a restaurant in an unfamiliar location, recruitment can be a conundrum if you do not know where to go. One of the best resources to help you narrow your options is the student body, especially your friends. If someone who has similar interests to you says something positive about a fraternity you are most likely to think highly of that institution. But do not limit yourself to one perspective as opinions can vary.
Step 3: Visit ufifc.com
The University Interfraternity Council website provides a plethora of information for prospective rushees. By clicking on the "Fraternity" tab at the top of the home page, you can find information on all of the active UF chapters including member size and what on-campus organizations brothers are involved in. In addition you can find the recruitment registration link under the "Recruitment" tab.
Step 4: Talk to the Brothers
Who can tell you about a fraternity better than an active himself? Sure, he will probably glorify the brotherhood and give you the whole "You will meet your Best Man here" spiel, but we often exercise judgement from first impressions. Get a feel for the fraternity before recruitment. You can do this by joining the brother's for an in-house meal or joining them for a night on the town.
Step 5: Visit GreekRank.com
Greek Rank allows students to anonymously rank a fraternity based on looks, popularity, classiness, involvement, social life, and brotherhood while also providing an opportunity for users to submit a written review. This can help you narrow your options but do proceed with caution as some of the reviews are written out of pure spite.
Step 6: Have Fun
This step is pretty self-explanatory but just go into rush with a positive, yet determined attitude. Getting a bid is one of the greatest accomplishments you will ever receive so play your cards right and prosper.
