Poverty Reduction Through The Borgen Project

“The Borgen Project is an incredible nonprofit organization that is addressing poverty and hunger and working towards ending them.” (The Huffington Post)

The Borgen Project was founded in 2003 by Clint Borgen and the focus of the organization is to focus U.S. political attention on extreme poverty. Poverty is an issue all over the world and it is something we are all sympathetic to in our own ways. Until this summer it has been an issue that I have easily overlooked. The Borgen Project offered me a PR/Marketing intern position in June and I gladly accepted it because it was time to make a difference. The Borgen Project makes it simple to start a movement in various ways and I am here to share with you how we can all help build awareness for global poverty and hunger through The Borgen Project.

1. Call or write Congress

Call or write congress to support the poverty-reduction legislation.

2. Email Congress.

Email congress to support global poverty bills.

3. Contact the White House.

It may seem like a lost cause but contacting the White House regarding poverty-reduction legislation does work and is very beneficial for the cause.

4. Build buzz.

Talk about the fight against global poverty to friends, family, and anyone who will listen.

5. Write a letter to the editor.

This gives you the opportunity to spread your thoughts on global poverty to thousands.

6. Post fliers.

Post fliers in businesses and locations that will have them.

7. Fundraising online.

Set up a fundraiser that goes toward poverty-reduction efforts.

8. Bird dog.

Publically ask a Congressional leader to support poverty-reduction efforts.

9. Mobilize others.

Much like building buzz, have others reach out to people they may know and have them build awareness for global poverty-reduction.

10. Post on your leader's social media.

Social media has made contacting more prominent people easier than ever so use this resource to contact your Congressional leaders.

11. Share the site.

Share The Borgen Project site.

World hunger will never be completely gone but it is so many people's dreams to see it come to an end one day. Impacting an issue as big as global poverty and hunger is something that takes patience and persistence but it is possible. The Borgen Project is proof of that. It takes minimal effort to touch the lives of those in need and this list is just a few examples on how to build up the awareness of this issue and motivate people to help. The more awareness we build the more funding goes towards poverty-reduction efforts and that is why it is significant to get the word out through as many outlets as possible.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
