Positive affirmations

My self-esteem has always been something I struggle with. My need for things to be perfect often leaves me frustrated. I start to doubt myself. In these times, what helps me get back on track is taking some time out, look in the mirror, and recite empowering phrases to myself. Now, these affirmations have become a part of my morning routine. If you, too, are looking for a pick-me-up, I invite you to repeat after me:

1. I am good enough.

I have spent one too many nights wishing I was someone else. I need to understand that nobody is perfect. There is a lot more than what meets the eye. From today forward, I will stop comparing my behind the scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel.

2. I am happy.

Just because the situation is bad doesn’t mean I have to let it ruin my day. Happiness is a choice, and I will actively make that choice every morning. From this day forward, I will remember to look at the bright side.

3. I am a priority.

At the end of the day, I am my longest commitment. It is important for me to not lose faith in myself. From today forward, I will be my biggest cheerleader.

4. I am beautiful.

True beauty encompasses both flawless skin, as well as stretch marks. It encompasses smiles, as well as tears. The good and the bad make up who I am, and that is the real definition of beauty. From this day forward, I will not let society’s unrealistic expectations control my body image.

5. I matter.

My feelings are valid. My opinions are valid. My ideas are valid. And I have every right to voice them. From friendships to relationships, I am worth the trouble. From today forward, I will never settle for less than I deserve.

6. I am smart

I am allowed to make mistakes and I am allowed to not know. But, I am not allowed to call myself stupid. My mind is sharp and ready to learn. I can do anything I set myself to. From this day forward, I will not let a bad grade define my intelligence.

7. I have faith.

Whether that faith comes from God or believing in the universe, things have a way of working themselves out at the end. I will finish school, get a job, get married, and live my life. From this day forward, I will not stress about the minor details, but rather, focus on the bigger picture.

8. I am not alone.

I am surrounded with people who love me. I am just as big a part of their life as they are in mine. From my family, to my friends, to my relationship, my life radiates with affection and support. From today forward, I will stop thinking that I have to go through this by myself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
