When you think of a Pop Music, you think of pretty, pink and bubbly. You think of untalented pop stars, over produced and auto-tuned.
What about when you think about Ariana Grande though? She's talented, and yet she is a pop star. Wait, I am confused! Ariana Grande can actually sing, and yet she is considered a pop-star, that is heavily produced, and digitalized.
I personally am a sucker for high notes, and soulful signing. Anyone that sings with expression and profound emotion is a winner in my book. And Ariana Grande is no exception.
Take a listen at her live performance of one of her new songs, Leave Me Lonley. You are going to notice, not a pop star, but a soulful singer giving a performance. In a stripped down stage setting, away with production, back-up dancers and the glitter, you see an artist's voice shine.
Those vocal runs, and the ease in her voice when she hits the high notes. I believe every word she melodically and powerfully and passionately belts out. Now, take listen at this next song, also from her new album, Into You, and notice the drastic difference.
There is simply too much going on in this song. And although you could clearly hear her vocal prowess, all of that is drowned by the digital recreation of her vocals. Sure, it is a catchy song, with a similarity to songs Britney Spears would make. But that is precisely the problem. Record Labels and Music Producers are stuck with "what works", instead of actually working on an artists' strengths, and making compelling music.
And this is where the limit and degrading comes in. Ariana Grande, with the talent she has, is deemed a mere pop starlet, and nothing else.
In the early 2000's, when Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera first entered the the pop culture scene, their sound was fitting to their vocal ability. Now, with any new pop star, they want to recreate that Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera success.
It isn't that they don't sound good, they do. But the fact that overproduced, auto-tuned and duplicated music is the type of music being pushed to the forefront, is a real insult to my musical taste.
But that is the mainstream today. You take the talented and you turn them into a generic brand, as opposed to molding them into their own, and actually being innovative with the music.
Ariana Grande is talented, without a doubt. It's just hard to see that, when she is marketed a certain way, to appeal to the toddlers. And we all know toddlers like shiny things.
And when she decides that she wants to be taken seriously, as an actual artist, instead of a pretty face, it will prove to be difficult. Especially if she continues making the music she is.
