The presidential election is set to be held on Tuesday, November 8 th, 2016 and the fact that I had to google it goes to show how invested I am in politics. Now, before you call me “ignorant” and ask what kind of want-to-be journalist I am, let me just say that journalism is not only politics.
I am not interested in politics because I honestly feel like I don’t gain anything out of it. Yes, I have a job that the government pays for and I guess the fact that they pay for my school should be an interest in itself but still, politics doesn’t give me butterflies like other news stories.
For me, politics is a subject that no one has any real solution for. We are promised solution after solution and yet we don't see any. President after president we are promised more money, more jobs, more insurance (in everything-- health, home, you name it) and although we see some progress it is still not enough. There's only so much we could do and it all starts on who we want to call president.
This was a topic of interest between a new friend and I during brunch the other day. In respect for her I will not include her name but she basically said “even if you don’t like anyone you should still vote because not voting will just end up hurting yourself later. You should make your voice heard”. I was completely flabbergasted by her statement because it is true but it still did not deter me from my decision to not vote this term.
However, just because I decide not to vote it does not mean that I should be ignorant to what the candidates are promising and how they are doing in the polls.
So here is what I know so far (thanks to google):
-As of Saturday February 6, 2016 Cruz is ahead in the Republican campaign while Clinton is ahead in the Democratic campaign
-12 candidates have dropped out
- Trump wants to build a wall to keep immigrants out
-As of Saturday February 6, 2016, Rubio and Trump are tied in the polls
-There are TWO women running for President of the United States with Clinton being the main focus (the other candidate is Fiorina for the Republican campaign)
It may not be much but for someone who is not interested in politics I say it’s a start. It will be interested to see how this semester in school will influence my look in politics. I still have a few months to find out.
