In recent years, the Asian American population has increased, and as one of the fastest growing minorities in the country their votes in these years election may very well impact who we see as president this coming November. Over the last twenty years the country as Asian American voter shift from a largely conservative position to a more liberal position.
Of all the racial groups in the country, Asian Americans are the least likely to vote in any national election. However, in the 2012 election nearly three-quarters of the Asian American population voted for President Obama. Political analysis say this is the most dramatic political shift in any presidential election year across all demographics. So what caused this dramatic shift?
While I can tell you all the issues Asian American side with, it is easier to look at this as a sociological view point. In our basic psychology classes we are tough there are two basic ways of understanding in relationships, and just like political parties these two basic understanding are very different from each other. the first way of understanding is the individualistic way, which says that each individual acts in away that benefits them as an individual and is least likely to act for the benefit of the group. However collectivist supports that and individual is more inclined to act in ways that benefit the group because it seas the the group as the primary focus ratter the the individual.
So what does this have to do with politics among the Asian Americanism. Simple. in that same psychology class we are also told that many of the Asian cultures support a more collectivist way of understanding. Many of the Liberal viewpoints fall inline with this collectivist culture, such as national health care, welfare, and an overall bigger government that seeks to aid its's citizens.
Despite being raised in a largely conservative house, I feel that I am falling in line with the liberal perspectives, just as many young people around me are. So what does this say about our young generation? Whole many would like to say that we are a generation consumed in our technology and concerned about are selves, I feel that we are so much more.
Yes, they can say that we don't work and just want to live off of hand out, however I feel that many of us want to grow and succeed, we just want to do it knowing that others have the same opportunities as we do. I think the younger generation has become more and more collective as time passes, and that is why we are seeing a surge of democratic positions among the younger generation.
