A Poem To My Forever Best Friend
Laurie Byrum

-- With Love, to my other half --

You've been in my life for quite awhile, long enough to experience all that I am. Through the good, the bad, the happy, the sad, I look back on all the memories and smile.

There are so many things I leave unsaid, because you know how grateful I am for you. Yet, I feel you should be reminded, now and again, so continue reading the words I meant to be read.

To start off, you're beautiful, inside and out. You can make anyone smile without a doubt.

Your laugh is contagious which is probably why, we go on laughing for hours, making each other cry.

I admire your heart that's so big and kind, you do anything for anyone, which is so hard to find.

Especially for me, your best friend of 11 years, you always know what I need, even if it means making me face my biggest fears.

I have so many thank you's I don't tell you enough, so I'll start with a thanks for being there when times get tough.

You were there when I thought my world was crashing down, and somehow you could make me smile when I thought I could only frown.

But you've been there for so many good times too, and you're always my biggest supporter, especially when it comes to buying those shoes.

I will cherish our memories for all of my days, and I hope we continue to make more, for the rest of always.

Harry Potter World, Chicago, and the beach are only some of the best, everything we've gotten to do together, shows we truly are blessed.

You always keep promises and are true to your word, and just like me, you're a bit of a nerd.

Thank you for always driving me around, because by not having a car I know I can be bit of a hound.

You're the best person to eat ice cream and pasta with, even if that makes our so called "diets" a myth.

It's sad when we separate to go back to school, for when my other half is missing I feel like quite the fool.

But it makes the letters and visits so worth the wait, and our eight hour FaceTimes when we stay up way, way too late.

Summers, however, will always be best, because you show up at my house unannounced, since you're not considered a guest.

Through this whole little thing I hoped I could convey, that I couldn't live without you, not even for a day.

My 500 words are coming to a close, so I'll say this now before I end -- thank you, I love you and I'm so lucky to call you my best friend.

Love,

Kristine

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
