I recently walked into a store, looking for the perfect outfit to wear. I asked the sales associate to help me to her best ability. I grabbed a top that said "Medium" on it and proceeded to the fitting room. As I was trying it on, it was too small and cutting the circulation on my body. I asked the lady for two sizes up because I wanted it to be a loose fitting top. The sales associate said, "sorry we don't carry plus size." Never in my life have I was told I was a plus size. I am 5'5 and a size 6.
PLUS SIZE MODELS ARE NOT PLUS SIZE
For those who have been told you are a plus size, be proud of your body! That day I was told I was a plus size, I was so surprised. I am not a plus size and just because you are anything larger than a large, don't be ashamed. Society has taught us that if we are not an extra small with a thigh gap, we are "obese." I actually hated going shopping in stores because of this. Just because I have wider thighs than models, I am considered "plus size." Stores should stop promoting anorexic looking girls as their models are promote more fuller looking women. This doesn't mean only women. I mean men too. When I look at the men in advertisements, I only see tall, ab ripping men. I never see a man that is a "regular" body with no abs. Yes they want to promote that it looks best on skinny men or muscle ripping men or women so skinny you can see their ribs, but in reality, not a lot of people achieve that look. Just how Barbie just began to bring out their new models of all different skin shades and showed that thick women are beautiful too, retail stores need to do the same thing.
Just because a poofy skirt is in style right now, women with wide hips can't wear them because it makes us look fat. Just because muscle tanks are in right now, doesn't mean that not all men could pull it off. We need to stop making only limited clothing because it is the trend right now but offer more styles. Just because it looks good on one person doesn't mean it looks good on the rest of us.
Society needs to stop thinking that girls with deep collar bones and a size 00 is the perfect girl and accept the fact that there are girls with a size 10 and up. Yes I understand that there are people who are born naturally skinny but there are people who aren't. Stores need to offer more clothing options that will look good on everyone while being fashionable.
