In 2016, we live an incredibly fast paced lifestyle, where sometimes we get so caught up in our day to day that we forget about THE most important thing... OUR HEALTH.
About a year and a half ago, I started to get very sick. Although, my entire life I have struggled with constantly being sick and feeling blah. This time was different. Not to give entirely TMI and gross you out before you finish this article, but I had violent vomiting episodes that were accompanied with severe pain. These episodes could last anywhere from a couple hours to a few days. I was in and out of emergency rooms because my symptoms were so severe, but there was nothing they could ever find. I began to see all kinds of specialists who ran test after test and put cameras in places you don't want cameras to be, but still nothing. I was entirely hopeless as this condition began to slowly consume my life and take me away from school, work, hobbies and friends. It wasn't until about a year later, when I met with a different gastroenterologist and nutrition specialist, that I began to get answers. The doctors recommended that I get some allergy testing done, and when the results came back, they revealed that I had an allergy to both eggs and milk. Which might I add were 2 very common ingredients in just about everything, including pizza... What is a girl to do without pizza?
In addition to my allergies, I was diagnosed with 2 conditions. One being Abdominal Migraines and the other being Gastroparesis (my stomach muscles are too weak to properly move food). Neither of these are curable, and treatments are essentially nonexistent minus a few medications to control symptoms. So it was mostly up to me to make changes with what I could control, and that started with the things I ate.
This is when I really took an active interest in teaching myself about the food I was putting in my body. With all this new information, I basically had to start over with the way I ate. Everything I loved eating before was now all off limits if I wanted to improve how I felt. Of course, there are times where I still eat the things I shouldn't. But not without paying the expensive price of feeling yucky.
I recently came across a "real company" that was founded on a story similar to mine, where the founders saw an immediate need for change and are now creating a world-wide movement trying to implement that change. I emphasize "real company" because they make healthy a very simple and straight to the point concept, in a way that isn't dressed in frills with a side of BS. They understand being human and sometimes overindulging ice cream. They are regular folks just like us, who wanted to try and do better. Wake The Wolves is a "recklessly fun and healthy lifestyle co." Steph and Graham are two incredible designers, who want to inspire the busy-bees of the world to be more mindful of their health and pay attention to what is being put in their bodies. Together, Steph and Graham are working with their team of health gurus on creating an interactive e-book series and producing various types of content that focuses on fun ways to form healthy habits!
