So it was that time of year again, the time when New York is killed with uncanny wardrobes, a slew of famous designers, and jealousy from all who can't take part in the action.
Although I would have loved to attend NYFW, I'm not completely let down about not attending because I got to live vicariously through Kelsey O'Brian, an FSU Chi Omega, as she gave me the scoop on one of the amazing shows that took place just last week, the Alice + Olivia show, or presentation as it should be called.
From being at a cocktail party that consisted of models standing around for two hours as everyone got quite a good look at the pieces they sported to even having to run around Manhattan in search of a banana for one of the models to snack on, she got quite the typical NYFW experience. I was pretty amped up to hear about all of the ins and outs.
What is Fashion Week in a nutshell?
- "Fashion week is when designers showcase their collections for the upcoming season. For example, the clothes shown in this past New York Fashion Week will be for Spring 2015."
Was there anything that really surprised you about Fashion Week?
- "I think the most surprising thing was how much detail goes into each one of these shows. For a while I thought that the designer decides what the clothes would look like and obviously come up with the general idea for the collection and that was about it. But there is so much more. I was fortunate enough to work with Alice + Olivia and help with their show this year. They put on a presentation instead of a runway show, which means that the models stand all around the venue and "model the clothes" for two hours, so it's basically like a two hour long cocktail party. Since I was fortunate enough to work with them on their presentation, I was able to see every detail that went into putting this together from things as simple as assembling the gift bags for the guests to dressing the models and getting them all through hair and makeup process".
So I have to know, was it organized or pretty chaotic, like it's usually portrayed?
- "Overall, when it came to the day of the show everything was pretty organized, but don't get me wrong there were several movements of pure chaos, like when a model felt like she was going to faint during the middle of the presentation and I had to run and find her a banana in the middle of Manhattan."
What really knocked your socks off at Fashion Week?
- "Obviously being around all of these beautiful clothes was amazing but something that I really loved about this experience was the how fast paced it is, as well as the high energy that you experience by being a direct part of a presentation. There is so much going on at all points in time and you are just going, going, going, kind of like the energizer bunny. But to see it all come together in the end is an amazing feeling".
I think it's safe to say that NYFW is an experience that everyone has to be exposed to at some point in time, and from what Kelsey said, it is an experience of a lifetime!
