In the months leading up to November, the internet is going
to be flooded with articles, memes, and other political propaganda. There is
nothing that can be changed about it. The past few elections have been in the
age of social media so more information is being shared in a click across the
world. Most the things being shared on politics are fact based or the author’s
opinion. This is my plea. A plea to those eagerly awaiting that slow Tuesday in
November. A plea to politicians. A plea to hard working college students planning
his or her first state dinner in the white house. It is time that we step up to
make changes not just in our country, but in our world.
The
past three years of my college career have changed my view on everything. The stuff
I fought for in high school, I now fight against. I went from a conservative
who believed that homosexuality was not a completely horrible thing just as
long as it doesn’t exist in my life to fighting for everyone to love whoever
they wanted without being judged. From telling my biology teacher in high
school that teaching evolution was going to send her to hell, to a girl looking
at me in my Hebrew and Christian traditions class telling me I was going to
hell for standing up for evolution. I am still not deep into politics and
science. Most of my studies revolve around 18
th century British
literature or historical fiction on the Tudor family, but I am more aware of
social issues than I was three years ago. It took three years for me to change
who I am completely. Three years to change my mindset of blackened hate. Three
years to go out in my tourist trap town and smile at those mostly judged by
locals. Change has helped me become a stronger and happier person
We have been a country for 240 years. If mindsets changed like mine that is a total of 80 times that our country could have changed from the original draft. We need to start changing who we are for the better. Someone once told me, “I will never see world peace in my lifetime, so why bother?” At the time, I agreed. But now I have a response for him. There might not be peace in our lifetime, but it does not mean that we cannot try. That we cannot continue to push harder for it.
Work for peace is meant to make sure a kid can go to his or her proper bathroom without fearing for his or her life. Work for peace is to make sure anyone of ethnicity can walk into a store without being singled out as a “criminal.” Work for peace is making sure a child will have a chance to become a doctor without having to take another life on foreign soil. It is the extinguishing of fear from anyone who feels suppressed. It is becoming better people, not just great people. America can work for this because America CAN. Because we know that it is not just about making things great again. Again implies that we are going back into a time where it was considered great for those generations. It makes America continue to grow. Make America better. When three years passes us by again then we continue to make America better. We continue to make America LOVE better. Once we work on us, then the world is our limit.
