The RPG game, "Undertale," has been out for about a month now, but it wasn't until recently that I was convinced to download it and try it and I am absolutely obsessed.
Here are some reasons you should follow my lead and play this wonderful, funny little game
1. You don't have to kill any enemies.
You will encounter many monsters throughout the game but these cute lil' guys aren't necessarily your enemies. In battles you don't simply have to go at your enemies with sword in hand (in fact, your weapons are more like a glove and your armor is an old tutu.) Instead, you have options. You can fight them plain and simple or, if you want to spare them you can choose to flirt, compliment, intimidate, tell a joke, give them a friendly smile, and more! "Undertale" is actually extremely unique in this regard because this is the very first RPG where you don't have to kill anyone.
2. There are multiple routes to play the game.
Essentially, your choices will lead you on one path out of three: The Pacifist Route, The Neutral Route, or The Genocide Route. The Pacifist Route means you do not attack or kill any opponents, The Neutral Route allows you to fight and kill when you deem appropriate, and The Genocide Route is when you, you guessed it, attack and kill anyone you come across. The game's options, dialogue, and areas are different depending on which one of these routes you play. One of the coolest parts about this is that, even if you restart certain parts or erase your file altogether and start a new game, the game will remember your previous decisions and reference them.
3. There's a skeleton who loves spaghetti.
Is there anything more I can say about this?
4. You have the option to date aforementioned skeleton.
Based on your decisions (and providing you don't kill the skeleton) you can date him. My options made my interaction with him a hang out rather than a date but either way it's incredible.
5. THERE ARE DOGS
You can meet, pet, fool, fight, and just generally enjoy the presence of dogs--especially when they think you smell like a "weird puppy."
6. The dialogue is fantastic.
The dialogue manages to be both disarmingly funny and sad at the same time. My phone's camera roll is filled with pictures of my favorite in-game dialogue.
One of my favorite moments occurs when a disembodied bunny head in a bar and grill tells you, "Help! I want new drinks an' h-h-h-hot guys!!!!"
7. The art style
The pixels, the androgyny of your playable character, the water and snow effects, and more contribute to how wonderful this game is just to simply look at.
I know RPGs aren't for everyone but I could not recommend "Undertale more." I'm almost finished with my first playthrough (I'm on The Neutral Route currently because I didn't know there was a pacifist option when I started) but I look forward to replaying along The Pacifist Route and seeing what new things this fantastic game has to show me.
You can download it on Steam!
