I have a strong believe that when attending a New York Rangers hockey game, you should participate and experience it 100%. NHL games are amazing events to attend. When attending these events you can witness once and a lifetime performances that you would only here about in dreams. These events are meant to be attended with people who are passionate and eat, sleep, and breathe hockey. That's what makes these memories last a lifetime.
I will always remember attending my first hockey game. I was in second grade. It was at Madison Square Garden, the world's most famous arena. The New York Rangers where playing host to the Carolina Hurricanes. I can remember my Dad and two brothers sitting in our seats. They were at the very top almost. They weren't the best, but it didn't matter to me. All that mattered was that I was present in the arena. It sure beat watching it on television. A couple of minutes into the game, the referees made a bad call against the Rangers. The fans went crazy. All the teenagers and young adults stood to their feet. The arena filled with boos. After the boos cleared out, a chant of," ASSHOLE!,ASSHOLE!" began. The little kid I was saw a couple of older kids a few sections over chanting it, so I began as well. I started yelling,"ASSHOLE!,ASSHOLE!" to show my anger toward the referee. The second my father herd, he started laughing. He then said," don't say that again."
I have attended many hockey games since my first game. The one thing I have learned is that you have to get involved and be the loud, rowdy, not your everyday self. If you going to show up their just to sit in your seat and not cheer or chant the whole game, why did you bother coming to begin with? You just look like an old guy sitting there on his recliner in his living room. If the referee makes a bad call, make sure you let them know. It doesn't matter if your seat is against the glass or the last one in the arena, you should be chanting at the top of your lungs and showing your love. Hockey is a passionate sport. You defend and love your team like their family.
When attending a game this past December, I took note that starting chants and being a pest to the fans of the opposing team is important too. When to rival teams play each other that is the best game to attend. The New Jersey Devils came to visit the Rangers. The two teams are known to have one of the best rivalries in the sport. From the opening moment of the game to the moment you got to your car, fans where heckling each other. It was a battle of who could out do who. Once the Rangers where winning the hockey game, the Devils fans began to leave the game. Ranger's fans would chant "Jersey transit." They were only chanting the name of a train, but it would get under the skin of Devils fans. They would also yell things toward the induvial themselves who were wearing the Devils jersey. As a passionate fan of your team, it's all part of enjoying the game.
Many think it is considered bullying or messed up. It is a two way street. When the Ranger fans go to the Devils Arena to play them, they witness the same thing to them for the most part. If the rangers where to lose in New Jersey, they would suffer from the chants as well. It all happens to everyone. As long as you take it as a fair sport , it's okay it give it out to other people.
