Okay, so everyone is talking about it, at least in my circles, but Pokémon Go is the hip and happening new game for your phone. Before any of you write it off for being nerdy or stupid, all I ask is that you at least try the game, or at most read what I have to say about it. Here’s my opening review and what I noticed when starting the game.
Let's start with some downsides and move to happier things. To start off, the features on this game are kind of limited in creating a character. Though I wouldn’t expect something as advanced as "Fallout 4" or "Grand Theft Auto V" character creators, it would have been nice to see some different hairstyles and things. However, in the past the only option in Pokémon character editors was gender, so having any variation was a serious change in the game. I keep having issues with my server, but considering that there are places in the world with servers completely down, I can get over that to some degree. The main problem I’m having with this game so far is how lost I was in the beginning. I exited the opening screens, made my username, and was thrown onto the map with almost no direction. The only way I even knew how to do anything is because of my brother. If you’re struggling, you can click on the Pokéball menu and find tips, which help to some degree. The rest I had to find out from friends or the internet.
Pokéstops are one of my favorite features in this game. The game gives you bits of information on random places around you and in turn, you can receive extra Pokéballs or eggs. One of these stops told us about the best burger place in the town we were staying, and we ended up eating some really nice burgers. What the game didn't tell me initially was that you have to swipe sideways at the picture of the stop to spin the icon, get items and earn the stop. I kept clicking on stops assuming I’d gotten some experience when actually I wasn’t earning anything. I guess the main problem I have with this game continues to rear its head: very little direction to new players.
Now, let's move on to something a bit more awesome. I caught an Eevee while out at a memorial today. An Eevee. Do you guys remember being stuck finding Ekans and Weedle for the first three hours of your play time in old Pokémon games? Imagine how cool it was to be out and finding Abra, Clefairy, and Eevee around my area. This game is entirely different because for once you’re starting out with a variety of Pokémon at your disposal. Even if you mess up in catching your Pokémon, you have plenty of Pokéballs given to you at the beginning and plenty earned from Pokéstops. Overall, if you grew up loving this franchise, try out Pokémon Go. There may be some issues in how it communicates directions, but the internet has your back. At least try this game; it’s so cool to be immersed in the world of Pokémon in your own home, and combining these our world with the Pokémon world is an experience that old players will love and new players will be fascinated by. It's so exciting to look at your phone, see another world and interact with it. Try Pokémon Go and learn a bit about the world around you and a new world you’ve yet to experience.
