Being in college is awesome, but eating college food is, well...not. Classes, homework and continual socialization make it basically impossible to cook, limiting our choices down to sad proportions. Whether it be the countless dining-hall-disasters or dinners consisting of Pizza Pockets and Ramen Noodles that’s got you down, one of these local restaurants is sure to satisfy your appetite without emptying your wallet.
1. Yama Sushi House
If you love sushi, you have to check out Yama Sushi House. Located at 62 Margaret Street, the new spot is only a ten minute walk from campus, and their menu is full of options -- from sashimi to steak teriyaki. The prices are good for sushi, especially compared to what those of you from downstate who are used to paying for the delicious stuff.
2. The Smoked Pepper
For some authentic Mexican food, try The Smoked Pepper. Just a block down from Yama Sushi House at 13 City Hall Place, the fun and loud, colorfully-decorated space is always a good time. The food is delicious, the atmosphere lively and the free chips and salsa are bomb - and the margaritas are the icing on the cake.
3. Campus Corner
Plattsburgh is short on good old school diners, but Campus Corner makes up for the lack of quantity with quality. The food at Campus Corner is classic diner fare, with everything from eggs and corned-beef hash to pancakes and BLTs. And a major plus: it serves as the ultimate hangover cure. You can find the little restaurant right over at 92 Bridge Street.
4. Sawatdee Thai
One of my favorite restaurants is Sawatdee Thai, located downtown at 15 Bridge Street. The Thai restaurant has the best authentic Asian food in town, and on Saturdays they even have traditional pork buns (which you totally have to try). The portions are huge, so you’ll most likely get two meals for the price of one (unless you just can't stop eating).
5. Mickey's
Mickey’s is the place to go for Plattsburgh’s best Italian food. The restaurant boasts the atmosphere of a traditional Italian joint with the food to match. On the corner of Riley Avenue and Weed Street, it’s located just a little east of downtown. And if you're looking for a place to bring someone on a date, this is definitely a good choice.
6. Michigans Plus
One of the best restaurants for those of us who are down to our last dollar is Michigans Plus. The restaurant, located at 313 Cornelia Street, has all the classic diner offerings and more. The prices are super-low, and the food (and desserts) are really good - but especially the desserts (trust me).
7. Aleka's
For a great gyro, pasta or even falafel, check out Aleka's at 103 Margaret Street. The Greek-Italian fusion restaurant has some of the most flavorful food in town and a ton of options. You can get a gyro or souvlaki that tastes way better than the ones off the streets of Manhattan, or a bowl of really good pasta - and tons more in between.
