As someone with a never ending desire to adventure and experience new things, I am always looking for new places to discover and explore. This can be hard at times when trying to stay local, but I have gathered eight of Long Island's best hidden treasures guaranteed to fulfill your inner wanderlust, and rejuvenate your soul. You will not want to miss out on these beautiful sights this summer.

1. Avalon Park and Preserve

Located at the heart of Stony Brook Village, Avalon Park is one of my favorite spots to find beauty and peace of mind. Perfect for sunny days out with your family or a romantic stroll with your significant other, it is a safe and creative little world to explore. Something that's especially unique about it is that it is connected to The Crocheted Tree Project, so on your journey throughout the park you will find many trees with crocheted "sweaters" as I like to call them, ultimately leading up to the entirely crocheted tree at the center of The Labrynth (Pictured). The beautiful scenery along with the crocheted pieces create a colorful and absolutely magical atmosphere.

2. Lily Pond County Park

Hidden away just off of the side of Smithtown Boulevard, Lily Pond County Park is a place that is easily overlooked. While only appearing to be a small trail, once inside you will find a beautiful lake, accessible from all sides if you stay on the path. The lake is surrounded by flowers and lies beneath countless lily pads, making it the perfect place to take in nature, or even go fishing. Another great addition to this park is that just minutes away is Lake Ronkonkoma; So if this view is not enough to fulfill your mind more adventure awaits around the corner.

3. Pirates Cove

If you're looking for a beach that is secluded and calm, Pirates Cove is the place to be. Most easily accessible through Belle Terre Village in Port Jefferson, Pirates Cove is a hidden treasure that not many people have found. A breathtaking view from all angles, it is the perfect place to find serenity. It is also great for exercising, spending time with friends, walking your dog, or even taking photographs.

4. Old Westbury Gardens

Founded in the early 1900's, Old Westbury Gardens is home to hundreds of acres of breathtaking gardens and paths to explore. You will truly feel in touch with nature, and will never want to leave. With such captivating scenery it is also a wonderful place for picture taking, popularly used for weddings and art exhibits.

5. Bayard Cutting Arboretum

With a dream to "provide an oasis of beauty and quiet for the pleasure, rest and refreshment of those who delight in outdoor beauty", Bayard Cutting Arboretum does just that. With riveting views of the lake surrounding their walking path along with the beauty of the Manor House, It is the perfect place to go for exercise or tranquility. Another awesome feature is that they have scheduled tours of the Manor House, which can be a great experience for lovers of old architecture, or even a simple family trip.

6. Caleb Smith State Park

Formerly known as the Wyandanch Preserve, Caleb Smith State Park has been around for centuries. It is a nature lovers paradise, home to many rare plants and furry friends. It is also a great place to take your family, as it offers many educational nature programs and natural history exhibits.

7. Montauk Lighthouse

If you're looking for an adventure, then take a trip down to "the end" of Long Island. Standing since the 1700's, the Montauk Lighthouse is a must see. Surrounded by ocean, it is the perfect place to sit and take in the view. The best part is that when you're done touring the lighthouse, you can head over to the beach for a stroll in the sand.

8. Frank Melville Memorial Park

With scenic lakes, a beautiful stone bridge, historical sites and even a small bamboo forest, Frank Melville Memorial Park provides countless views that will take your breath away. As you walk along the trails here you will find one adventure after the other, waiting to be explored. It is one of my personal favorites for an active day with friends, or taking "artsy" pictures.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
