As a college student on a budget, I’m always looking for a bar that can be my place. You know, that one dive that makes your rum & Coke just the way you like it, or that other bar with nachos that are to die for. After much trial and error, I’ve found some places that I just can’t stay away from. If you’re looking to go out in Pittsburgh (or are new to the bar scene), here are a few of my favorite places that will wet your whistle without draining the bank!
1. Garage Door Saloon, Oakland
My personal fave, Garage Door is always a go-to for my nights out in Oakland. If you’re looking for a chill place, this is it. They have the typical bar pool tables, pretty great drinks, and most importantly, a window attached to a pizzeria! Honestly, what more could a gal ask for?
Go-To Drink: Double vodka & sprite and a pudding shot to wash it down
2. Howl at the Moon - Downtown
As soon as I stepped into Howl at the Moon, I knew it was going to be an instant favorite. This dueling piano bar has got some delicious drinks and amazing entertainment. They played “Watch Me” by Silento and “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac within 15 minutes of each other, and I was hooked. Once you walk in, you’ll be singing and dancing until closing time.
Go-To Drink: Valley's of Neptune
3. Hemingway’s Cafe, Oakland
Hemingway's is great if you’re on a budget and looking to have a night you won’t remember. Their shot pitchers are a great way to get a buzz quickly, and they’re great for sharing! Also, they’ve got killer deals every day for food and drinks: half-off food from 9 to midnight, $2.50 draft specials every day, and $2 off all drafts from 10 to midnight. Hem’s is great for large groups, so don’t shy away from going there with the whole squad!
Go-To Drink: Long Island Iced Tea Shot Pitcher
4. Tavern 245, Downtown
Tavern 245 is my first choice for Happy Hour, especially when I’m looking to treat myself. I love the rooftop bar and their great assortment of appetizers, but what makes it a favorite are their (affordable) cocktails. They make their cocktails using fresh ingredients, and you can taste the difference. Do yourself a favor and try their mojito — you won’t regret it.
Go-To Drink: Mojito
5. Mad Mex, South Side or Oakland
Okay, so this isn’t as much a bar as it is a sit-down restaurant with a really great selection of drinks. They give you a lot of booze without breaking the bank, and it’s a great place to go when you want to keep drinking but need to take a breather (and munch on nachos in the meantime). Can you tell me anything better than eating a taco and sippin’ some $6 sangria? I bet not.
Go-To Drink: Red Sangria or Original Recipe Margharita
