When I’m bored, I pin. Which is the majority of the time. Recently I’ve found a lot of DIY tutorials that I’m dying to try out. If you’re looking to do something innovative to spice up your summer here are some simple ideas that are sure to give you a creative edge (seriously, if I can do them anyone can).
1. American Flag Shorts: Don’t know what to wear for all of the upcoming summer country concerts? My predicament exactly; with Kenny Chesney coming up I found myself surfing the Pinterest world for something unique and DIY to wear. That’s when I stumbled upon these adorable (and easy to do!) American flag shorts. Here’s how to:
-Step 1: Grab an old pair of high wasted jean shorts.
-Step 2: Buy a small flag from a place like Wal-Mart/the dollar store.
-Step 3: Cut out two patches for the 2 front pockets of your shorts; one with stars and one with stripes
-Step 4: Sew on your patches with a needle and thread and ta-da! Simple as that.
2. Craft Kit: Want to surprise your little next year with an awesome gift but can’t decide on one thing? Make a craft kit! You’ll need: A large bin/tub, paint, misc. items (bows, costume jewelry, paintbrushes, canvas, picture frames, recipes). Prepare your little for all of the fun events to come by incorporating items from all of your themed party costumes! Decorate the outside of the bin with fun shapes like chevron, and your letters of course! This craft kit is sure to make your new sister feel prepared and excited for what’s to come in the new school year.
3. Magnetic Makeup Holder: Want to de-clutter your desk and makeup bag? Take the stress out of your morning rush and try this simple tutorial to not only display your makeup better, but to keep your mirror space cleaner. This is a great idea for your dorm room! Okay, so, the necessities: a picture frame, scrapbook paper, magnets, metal cookie sheet, and a glue gun.
-Step 1: Using a sizeable metal sheet such as a flat cookie sheet, place inside the picture frame.
-Step 2: Make a pretty background for your picture frame with fabric or scrapbook paper and place over the metal sheet.
-Step 3: Attach magnets with hot glue gun to the back of your makeup products (such as eye shadow, blush, etc). You can also attach cups to hold makeup brushes and smaller items such as mascara and lipstick.
-Step 4: Arrange makeup products and hang on wall!
4. Sparkle up your life: (My personal favorite) ‘glitterize a reusableStarbucks cup.’ I can’t imagine myself having a bad day drinking out of this glam cup; it’s just not possible!
-Step 1: Remove the middle layer of the cup.
-Step 2: Spray the inside of the outer layer with spray gloss.
-Step 3: Add a decent amount of loose glitter and shake the cup so it gets evenly distributed.
-Step 4: Repeat steps 2 & 3 until your desired amount of glitter is achieved.
-Step 5: Spray some spray gloss all over the glitter so it stays in place and put back the cup’s middle layer.
-Step 6: Let dry and immediately watch your day brighten as you drink from this cheery cup.
5: Customized coasters: Excited about moving into your new apartment/home next year and want to get a head start on your décor this summer? These customizable coasters are a sure way to add some personality to your kitchen table. You can even buy plain tiles from Home Depot for under a dollar. So simple yet so adorable! Items needed include: scrapbook paper, mod podge, and tiles.
-Step 1: Cut out scrapbook paper to size of tiles, leaving some space between each edge.
-Step 2: Brush a thin layer of mod podge on the back of the scrapbook paper and place onto the tile. Pat down and let dry.
-Step 3: Brush mod podge over the finished product to create a coating to seal in the paper.
