The Pink Tax. Do you know what this is? If you don't, then let me define it for you. This term refers to the additional amount that women are charged when paying for certain products or even services. I didn't realize that this was a thing until I recently went to Target and noticed how a 2-pack of women's deodorant costs more than a 2-pack of men's deodorant. Hello, theses two objects are doing completely the same thing, so why is it okay for companies to charge women more than men?
I did some research and found out that on average, women spend about $1,351 in extra costs. (Do you know what I could do with an extra $1,351? I could go on a trip, go out to eat more with my friends, buy more clothes, and most importantly, pay off some of my student loans.) This money pays for extra prices put on clothes, dry cleaning services, feminine products, and even vehicle repair. Just because women generally don't know as much about cars when compared to men, doesn't that it is okay for us to be charged more when we need an oil change! I'm sorry, but this is an outrage because women are expected to pay more when we are generally paid less than men. To be exact, women are paid only 77 cents for every dollar a man makes.
So, what can we do about this pink tax? Well, for starters, women could shop more in the men's aisle. However, our brains are trained to go more for the things that identify with our gender (which really stinks, may I add). Also, you can voice your opinion on this pink tax to those that don't even know this exists. The more dialogue created, the more people will know about this situation.
I don't understand why women are subjected to paying more for items and services that both men and women need. It is unfair, degrading and absurd. Do companies think women are dumb and don't notice this? Well sorry, but women completely do notice this. Basically, all I'm asking here is: why do women have to be charged extra just for being women?
