Pies for Philanthropy

81

Every spring semester the members of Pi Beta Phi spend an entire evening raising money for their philanthropy by letting people throw pies in their face. All the money raised goes to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation that promotes childhood literacy.

This year we were lucky enough to raise more than $2,300 for the foundation thanks partly to the parents who were in town for parents weekend.  The Ohio State Pi Phi’s aren’t the only ones who do this though. Many chapters across the nation host Pie a Pi Phi. The Ohio Beta chapter has been participating in this Pi Phi tradition for a little over 10 years and it’s members look forward to it each year.

By the end of the night everyone is covered head to toe in whip cream. Members of the Greek community who aren’t even in our chapter think it’s hilarious and are coerced into getting pied themselves. It’s funny to watch people wipe their faces off only to get surprisingly pied again right after. There’s always great music and this year we even had cookout with burgers and hot dogs.

My favorite part of the whole event though is the pie eating contest between the different Greek chapter’s presidents. Each president got an entire cherry or apple pie and the one who ate it the fastest was declared the winner. This year the president of Delta Tau Delta won but every president gave it their best and ended up with a face covered in pie. Personally, this year I alone got pied over 20 times. I couldn’t get rid of the smell of whip cream for the rest of the night but it was fun and worth it.

Overall, the event went very smoothly and a lot of money was raised for a great cause. Pi Phi is so thankful for all the Greek community’s support of the event and is already looking forward to next years Pie a Pi Phi.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
