This New York Times article, “Attacks persist but Nigerian Authorities say Boko Haram is losing ground” is about Nigeria and where Boko Haram stands now. Just like in the title the articles proves true that Boko Haram has been losing control and power lately. They have not stopped and let up, but they are being attacked and the efforts to stop them are slowly starting to work. It says in the article that the United States has stepped up and sent troops as well as drones to aid Nigeria in the attempt to rid their country of these violent and unruly people. This is a horrendous situation and I think we can see that the United States is helping to make progress at the least in stopping this group.
In my class we read the book, "Tiny Little Song Birds," which was set in Nigeria and we learned about what Boko Haram can and does do to the people of this country. This article is bringing that to life and showing what is actually being done today to stop this. In the article it says that “Boko Haram seems to be disorganized now” this is a good example of how these efforts are working. In the book we saw the same thing when the grandmother leads the march and ends up making a change. The march was just enough to change up their thought process. I think it’s safe to say that this is the same thing that is happening with us getting involved and sending over drones which will switch things up a bit and maybe they will finally be defeated.
In this article it is also mentioned a program that is helping youth make a better life for themselves through getting jobs. It’s a training program that will teach these young people who have been affected by boko haram how to work and provide for themselves. This is an excellent move in the right direction and will defiantly aid in getting the country back on their feet after this take over in power.
