Persona 5 wins "Best Role Playing Game of the Year" award during The 2017 Game Awards.
The game was nominated in quite a few categories such as Best Score/Music, Best Art Direction and Game of the Year. Katsura Hashino, the director and creative producer for Persona 5, was more than happy to take home the one and only, RPG victory.
Hashino creates and directs games for Atlus, a video game company based in Tokyo and a subsidiary of Sega. Through the Atlus U.S.A. Facebook page, he discusses his views on winning the best RPG award of 2017:
“I am extremely humbled and honored that Persona 5 received the 'Best RPG' award. I’d like to thank everyone on behalf of the development team. I never imagined Persona 5 would be recognized worldwide, considering it is a game about adolescents set locally in Tokyo, Japan, and does not have open world features. I cannot express how happy and also proud I am that so many people around the world enjoyed the game design regardless of cultural background and knowledge of the setting. The development team and myself will take on many projects to come, but we’d like to look back at this award as encouragement to continue creating unique gaming experiences that many of you can empathize with.” he said.
According to PlayStation, Persona 5 is a video game about the internal and external conflicts of a group of troubled high school students - the protagonist and a collection of compatriots he meets in the game's story - who live dual lives as Phantom Thieves. They have the typically ordinary day-to-day of a Tokyo high schooler: attending class, after-school activities, and part-time jobs. But they also undertake fantastical adventures by using otherworldly powers to enter the hearts of people.Their power comes from the Persona, the Jungian concept of the "self"; the game's heroes realize that society forces people to wear masks to protect their inner vulnerabilities, and by literally ripping off their protective mask and confronting their inner selves do the heroes awaken their inner power, and use it to help those in need.
There were many games nominated for The Game Awards such as Destiny 2, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Life is Strange: Before the Storm and many others that were recognized for their success.
There is much more coming from Atlus and Katsura Hashino himself. Opportunities can happen, even behind a mask. The Phantom Thieves had the power to steal the RPG award and it's a great one.
