When you have that person who will stick with you through absolute hell, did you know they were going to be this important to you? Did you look at them and think, "They will be with me forever?"
I have never been the person to take things that far. In the words of many people, every hello always has its goodbye. People leave. People change. You can call me morbid, but in the end, you know I'm right. The people you had 10 years ago are not the people you have now. The people you have last year are not the same people. We change every day, constantly becoming different versions of ourselves.
So to the person (or, in my case, multiple people) who has stuck with me through every hell I have dragged you through, thank you.
I don't say that enough. I can't say that enough. Thank you for not leaving me when things get rougher than I can imagine. I only hope I can be as loyal to you as you have been to me. Now, I understand I am not the easiest person to know. I am complicated, maybe even a little crazy. But I have good reason to believe that all of the best people are — because you are too. We can communicate with just facial expressions, we know what each other is thinking and, most of all, we know when something is wrong.
That's the most important thing about it all. When they look at you, and you can feel that they know that you are not you. And you can instantly predict what they are about to ask you:
"Are you OK?"
And you nod, because compared to all of the other crap in this world, your problems seem insignificant. You don't want to bother anyone with the things going on in your mind. But this person assures you that your problems are valid, emotions are normal and you have every right to feel. They are sticking with you, even when you think you don't need them.
It's not just the hard times either. It's when you feel the sunshine on your face, when you have no cares in the world, when for moments on end you feel insanely happy. They are there too, enjoying life with you. And I think that it's incredible beautiful to have someone stick with you, even when you have nothing else to give. To have them be there with you even when things aren't all rainbows and sunshine, now that's the most raw and honest human connection we can have with someone.
We all have our own person. But I believe that there can be more than one. Find your people, appreciate them, because they are certainly not easy to find. It takes a lot of trial and error to get to the good people in life.
To the person who has been there through everything,
Thank you.
