The Perks And Struggles Of Being Tall

I wouldn't change my height no matter what.

Being above average height definitely has its advantages and disadvantages. I’m 5’11”, and it took me a while to learn how to love and appreciate my height. The following are a combination of both the struggles and perks of being tall. The items on the list are basically everyday occurrences for me.

1. People assume that you’re some sort of athlete

In reality, you’d much rather eat brownie brittle and watch your favorite show on Netflix than work out. For years I've been asked if I play volleyball or basketball, but I'd much rather relax.

2. Corners of furniture are pretty much your enemy.

No matter how much you try to be careful, you somehow manage to still run into the corners. But why? Some say I'm uncoordinated... and they would be right.

3. You feel helpful when people ask you to reach a high place

Whether it’s a stranger at Target or your mom, surprisingly, helping reach the higher shelves happens a lot.

4. You constantly feel like you’re blocking someone’s view.

At this point, I can pretty much tell when there is someone behind me, without looking. I always feel guilty, but sometimes I can't move.

5. You can always see over crowds. Always.

The only time this is untrue is when there is someone even taller than you standing in front of you, which is rare.

6. Having people come up to you and say...

“You’re tall. How tall are you?”

When answering this obvious question, I try to take it as a compliment, but other times I take a more sarcastic route, "I'm tall?"

7. You’ll never have to worry about where to stand in a group photo.

I'm grateful that I've never had to do the "awkward squat" in the front.

8. It’s a real struggle trying to find clothes that are an appropriate length.

Why must all the cute dresses be extremely short?

9. Finding jeans and dresses that are long enough is like a small victory.

Shout out to Old Navy and Delia's.

10. You always have to bend down just to see your full image in a mirror.

Finding a full-length mirror truly is a blessing.

11. Finally, you naturally walk faster, which means you'll almost never be late to class.

Except when you're walking with a shorter friend, and they tell you to stop running.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
