The Perks Of Being A Hufflepuff

Hard work, patience, loyalty, fair-play.

In the world of Harry Potter, Hufflepuffs get misrepresented all the time, generally pegged as the least clever of all the houses. We get it, our name sounds cute, but we aren't all chocolate frogs and sunshine. Pomona Sprout, Cedric Diggory, Newt Scamander and Tonks are all famous Hufflepuffs. So, I've come up with a list of reasons why Hufflepuff is the best house.

1. We founded Hogsmeade.

Yep, that's right! Hogsmeade, the only all-wizarding village, was founded by a Hufflepuff. Hengist of Woodcroft founded it while being persecuted by Muggles. If it wasn't for us, there would be no weekend trips to Hogsmeade to get sweets at Honeydukes, or Zonkos Joke Shop for a prank to pull on old Snape.

2. We produce very few dark witches and wizards.

The only thing we lack in comparison to all the other Hogwarts houses is a list of dark witches and wizards. It's speculated that our house hasn't produced any at all, but one can never be certain. I feel like the image below just about sums this point up.

3. Our common room feels just like home.

The Hufflepuff common room is actually below ground. The entire inside always has that sunshiny feel and all the wood is a honey color. We have colorful plants on practically every shelf, some of which sing and dance. We even have homey little quilts on our beds. Best of all, our common room is right next to the kitchen, which is great for sneaking midnight snacks!

4. We're secretly clever.

Speaking of the common room, good luck getting into it! We are the only house with preventative measures against anyone who might try to get a peek in our common room. If you get our password wrong, you'll find yourself drenched in vinegar. We're clever, we just don't rub it in everyones face. We Hufflepuffs like to lay low.

5. Our mascot is a badger.

The badger is a very chill animal until provoked. Badgers are capable of defending themselves against animals that are double and triple their own size. Much like a badger, a Hufflepuff will wreck you if you mess with us, our friends, or our family. Nobody scares us.

6. We stayed for the Battle.

Hufflepuffs are credited with staying for the Battle of Hogwarts alongside the Gryffindors. However, J.K Rowling credited this to their protective nature and it being "who they are" as opposed to the prideful, show-off Gryffindors.

7. We actually like everyone.

We don't judge, we just don't. Cedric was actually the one to give Harry the hint to open the egg in the Triwizard Tournament, even though everyone hated Harry at the time. Also, some of our greatest friends actually come from Slytherin! Just because a house produces a lot of dark wizards doesn't mean they're all that way.

8. We have Tonks.

Tonks represents those of us who may have gone a little rogue on our house qualities. Tonks wasn't necessarily either patient or just, she just got it done. Tonks embodied the spirit of a true Hufflepuff by dying in The Battle of Hogwarts alongside her husband, Lupin, while they defended the castle.

9. Mom likes us best.

During one of J.K. Rowling's interviews, she stated that “In many, many ways, Hufflepuff if my favorite house.” In the same interview she also stated, "I think we should all want to be Hufflepuffs," implying that we have the best virtues of all the houses.

"You might belong in Hufflepuff,

Where they are just and loyal,

Those patient Hufflepuffs are true

And unafraid of toil."

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
