Selecting a college major is one of the most important decisions we’ve had to make in our lives so far. While there are unique benefits to almost any major, I truly believe (although I may be a little bit biased) that studying a foreign language is the way to go. Don’t believe me? Here are just a few of many reasons why foreign languages majors are the best majors.
1. You can talk to your major friends in the target language and no one around you knows what you’re saying.
This can especially be useful at parties and other large group gatherings when it is imperative to talk about what’s happening around you immediately.
2. Cultural classes mean food, music and dance are a daily part of your curriculum.
Holiday coming up? You can bet class will be spent eating delicious foods and dancing to cultural music.
3. It’s a great conversation starter. People love asking us how to say weird things in other languages!
Teach someone slang in a different language and you have an instant friend.
4. You have the ability to communicate with an entire group of people you wouldn’t be able to connect with otherwise.
It’s incredible to think of the bonds I was able to make with people through the Spanish language. At my language school in Valencia, there were students from all over the world, some of whom didn’t speak English. I also made friends in the residency I stayed at using only Spanish as well. I am so grateful for the people I’ve connected with through my second language.
5. Dreaming in the target language is so cool.
Anyone who has experienced this knows what I mean. Waking up and realizing you dreamt in your second language is one of the most exciting things that can happen to someone studying a foreign language.
6. You learn empathy and respect for people different from yourself.
Let me just say I will never tell someone that they need to “just learn English” or be frustrated with someone because it takes them a little extra time to express what they need. Because believe me, been there and done that. After been in a place where I had to use my second language to maneuver through daily life, I have a completely new level of respect and understanding for those who are trying to thrive with a partial language barrier.
7. Two words: Study. Abroad.
It will hands down be the best semester of your life. The best part? It’s a requirement.
8. It feels so great to be able to interpret for people at the grocery store, at a coffee shop, etc.
Another one of the most exciting moments for those of us studying a foreign language.
9. Speaking two languages will never make you less marketable.
Because you’ll never hear anyone say, “No, we don’t hire people who are bilingual."
