If you're a non-drinking college student, you understand the struggle. In high school you were able to get by with being a homebody, no questions asked. But in college, you tell someone you don't drink and they look at you like you just beamed down from Mars. You're constantly bombarded with questions about why you don't drink, and you never really know how to answer. Maybe you do have one specific reason. Maybe you've watched alcohol ruin a family member's life, or maybe you're just a rule-follower and you value obedience to the law. For many non-drinkers, the answer isn't all that clear-cut. You don't drink for a number of good reasons. The following are just a few of those reasons, so the next time someone gawks at you asking why hit them with one of these answers.
1. Because livers are important
Sure, alcohol won't damage your liver too badly if consumed in moderation, but it doesn't hurt to have a super extra healthy liver either.
2. Because a 4.0 is a beautiful thing
If anyone is able to maintain a 4.0 while also drinking on a regular basis, they're either a superhuman or an arts major. Between classes, work, and extracurricular involvements, you have no idea how you could ever go out partying every week. Props to those who can, but it's not the lifestyle for you.
3. Because you have more room to consume calories from food
Fun fact: One shot of vodka can contain over one hundred calories. If you are a weight-conscious person, that's one hundred calories worth of grub you're missing out on.
4. Because you have more time for Netflix
When you're done with homework for the night, you're feeling pretty tired, and the last thing you want to do is go out, drink, and socialize. You'd much rather spend the last few hours of the day curled up in bed, indulging in a sweet Netflix binge. Your friends may be begging you to come out to the frat party, but you have a date with Jax Teller and you are not about to stand him up.
5. Because you like being in control of your actions
Your life is full of enough worries as it is. You don't feel the need to tack on regrets over drunk texts, make-out sessions, and vomiting episodes.
6. Because sleep is nice
Your friends tell you stories of getting home at five in the morning after a night of partying, and you cringe at the thought of it. If you're ever out past midnight, you feel completely debilitated for the rest of the week.
7. Because you attract the right kind of people
This reason might require the most explanation, but it's one of the most important. There are a lot of people out there who are overly self-indulgent and cannot seem to have a good time unless alcohol is involved. While these people may be fun to party with, they typically don't make the best friends. If you're a non-drinker, you don't attract these kinds of people. Either your friends are also non-drinkers, or they are drinkers who respect your decision to be alcohol-free and value you enough to spend time with you without drinking. As a result, you'll find yourself surrounded by people who genuinely care about you and who know how to have a good time even without a buzz.
As much as you get annoyed with the constant questioning of your decision, you secretly enjoy being distinguished as a non-drinking college student. You're healthier, you have time for more important things, and you feel like you have a better grasp on life. Most importantly, you know you are a rare commodity, and you are proud.
